Hello,
Despite this gun not having been fed much ammo, overall, it was the first non-rimfire I ever shot -- Dad's Security Six:
Serial no. 159-73xxx
I'm thinking it has to be early to mid 80's?
Is there anything else I should know if I wanted to play around with aftermarket grips, like is this a "low back" as I was thinking?
I appreciate your help.
Like I said in my intro post, I find myself using it, now, more than my Python, partly due to the Ruger's shorter barrel being comfortable to handle (I got the 6" barrel in my "bucket list" Colt that I'm winding up pickling in the safe, and the Ruger more for everyday open carry in the Ocala National Forest WMA where I live and hike).
I didn't expect to inherit this gun at this time or I mightn't have bought the Colt. The Colt is a bit more buttery smooth with the trigger pull and all, but was expensive. I am really enjoying the consistent use of the Ruger.

Thanks for anything you'd like to tell me about it!

Welcome to the forum.
You can find year of birth at Ruger’ web site.

No, it is not the low back grip frame. 99% of those are with the 150- prefix while a scant few sport the 151- number.

Looks like yours might have the “Heavy Barrel” which is a pretty desirable feature for many collectors.

Once you have enough posts or become a Supporting Member you can use the Classified Section to search for grips a member may have for sale. Also …. You can use the “Search” feature to look for other Security Six threads that will surely have more info for you.

Nice!

What are you looking for in the grip department? i have a set of the rubber pachmayr presentation grips, that would fit your gun, that i am about to list for sale.

As a 159- serial number it is not a lowback frame. The s/n makes it produced in 1983. There are a myriad of aftermarket grips made for these guns unlike for the low back framed guns (s/n 150- and a very few 151-'s). And as said, it does look like the heavy barrel which many like.

The Colts and Smiths might have a better trigger pull, but ithe Ruger can be made to match either of those brands. The other BIG plus factor, even though Ruger no longer makes them, is that they are much easier to repair and parts, although a bit harder to find, can be found. And the Ruger is, IMO, a much more rugged firearm in the long term.
