Security-Six frame change - what year...

My swiss-cheese memory at work - the Security-Six frame changed when the right-side recoil shield was "scalloped out, instead of the round configuration previously found. IMO an essential improvement.

All my Security-Six guns are late models with the scallop.

When did this happen?
Was it a prefix-specific change or just a production-year modification within a particular prefix, or what?!?

My first Security-Six, a stainless 4", was purchased in 1980 and had the scalloped recoil shield. This made me wonder about the timing of the change. I'm going to have to look up my first gun's serial and check on this.

I'm sure this is a dumb question, but can someone enlighten me on the upside of a scalloped recoil shield?

I guess it shaved an oz. or so off the weight. I have a '79 that doesn't have it. I prefer the non scalloped ones, but both look good to me.

I think the weight was added in other areas. The fixed sight scalloped frame guns have a thicker top strap which gives a deeper fixed sight channel.

It's just me, but side-by-side the non-scalloped guns look "unfinished"? The previous models just have that hump o' round metal.
