Please excuse the crappy phone photo, but this is a Security Six that I found locally and I just snapped it up.
Stainless steel, 4 inch barrel, and 357 Mag, which is pretty common BUT it has a grooved trigger (an early feature), four line info markings on the barrel, and micro sized serial numbers. These numbers, as I understand it, were stamped with the same number die set that was used on the over/under shotguns so not so many were made before they went back to the larger serial numbers.
The serial number is 154-697XX so it was made in 1979 according to Ruger. It also came with Pachmayr Presentation grips which I swapped out for an extra set of factory grips I had laying around. It was in really good condition but had some gummy residue which I was able to rub off.
I'm pretty stoked!

I keep hearing that 4" stainless .357 are common. I haven't found one yet. I want one bad. Lucky you are.

Well, since Ruger quit making them in 1988 none of them can be considered common, hence my posting.
I was overjoyed to find it at a local gun business. I'm going to the casino tomorrow and see if my luck holds out.
I guess I just assumed that the 4 inch model would be the most numerous ones produced, as compared to the 2 3/4, 3, and 6 inch models.
Good luck in your hunt!

I bought my blued 4" Security Six in 1972 - the first year of production. It also has a grooved trigger. Best $85 I ever spent. My guess is that it has at least 3000 rounds down the tube. The trigger is as good as a S&W, and more accurate than my 6" Model 19.

Back around 1984 or 85, I was buying Security Six revolvers by the boxful and reselling @ $50 each profit. Police dept turn-ins when they switched to semi-auto pistols. The majority were SS but some were blue (less desirable to my clientele). I kept one blue for my own use and sold another to a friend--got that one back in deplorable condition after he died. I gave Dad a pristine SS which was stolen after his death by another of Mom's sons. I do have a SS that has an action tune-up and bobbed hammer but it seems my older Son has it on permanent loan  .

I was lucky enough to find my Service Six about 5 years ago... It was hidden in the back of the used gun cabinet at the LGS. It was a little rough for wear but it functioned flawlessly. SS was easy to buff out the blemishes. She is a keeper and has since gotten a nice pair of Elk Stag grips.

Nice find of a great gun. I went to my LGS a few years ago to buy a particular revolver he had when I spotted this 155 prefix 2 3/4" Security Six 357 which I left with. I had it by my side when I read your post. It has the grooved trigger like yours.

That is a fine one, and one of the models we hope to find someday! :)

They can be found online relatively easily and for decent prices too. Much easier to find than any of the other configurations especially the rare ones. Finding one in local shop is kind of tough but very easy online. My first Six was a stainless 4 inch 357, and it's a low back too! In fact all of mine are stainless 357s. Here's a pic but it wears different grips now.
