Hello all,

I just saw a Security-Six in .38 special, with a 5" barrel, stainless.
I wrote down the number, 159-29723.
Does anybody know the year of production? Was it a regular production gun or some special run?

Ruger website doesn't go that far back to help me.
Thanks!!

Buy it!!!
One of 5 made up for an RCMP test.
Take pictures and post them here. Offer to sell it to me! Serious case of Ruger Wants just set in! shaking, drooling - I got it bad!
(Did you say 'Security Six' or 'Service Six'? 5" Security Six is unknown. )

Rugers web site puts it in the 1982 range.

Security Six (usually) = adj. sights.
Police Service Six = Fixed sight, square butt.

.38 spl Security Sixes are rare.
5 inch barrels are unknown in adj. sight models.

Was there 30 or so 5" blue Sec. Six's made in .357 for the RCMP? Wasn't one for sale here once?

This one the OP mentions is stainless.

The RCMP guns are Police Service Sixs - fixed sight, not adj. sight.
The Security Six is normally adj. sight. (a few early (150- prefix) fixed sight, square butt guns were marked 'Security Six')

Thanks for the info!
I only looked briefly, but I'm sure it is a Security-Six, but Service-Six.
Adjustable sights, and what they call "target grips" - a rectangular checkered pattern on the insert, not the diamond shape one seen on other Security-Sixes.
I need to seriously check it out tomorrow. The price was $439 - reasonable, I think

I'm guessing a Security Six with a six inch barrel. That would make it one of the CHP preliminary or RFP guns. Ruger did not secure the CHP contract.
Measure it to be sure.

Right on, Terry T!

It's a 6" (measured), and it has CHP written on the left side.
Looks to be in good condition - I don't know if I'm trying to convince myself, but it's moot now - because
I bought it.

Pictures to follow soon.

Thanks to Ruger community for helping me out. In my first year on this forum I learned a lot.

Est. 500 produced - unknown how many of those 500 were actually stamped 'CHP'.
S&W kept the contract with their model 68. I have examples of the Ruger and the S&W and the S&W model 19 CHP 50 year commerative. Think I put a post on the forum with a photo of all 3.
