Scoping a No. 1

I just bought my first No. 1 - one of the recent Lipsey's guns in 6.5x55 (a 1A). I purchased it from El_Numero_Uno after the full-throated recommendation of this forum.

My question now is regarding scopes. I will likely use a Leupold VX-II in 2-7x33 or 3-9x40. I have seen other sources that recommend using an offset rear ring (or two offset rings) to bring the scope further back. Have any of you tried this, and what do you recommend?

Thanks in advance,

SR

I had the 2x7x33 on mine, until I sold that scope and replaced it with a 2x7 Euro 30. I used LOW rings, no offset, and it worked just right. The rear edge of the scope was about over the front tip of the safety. Some people, probably with shorter arms than mine, have a shooting style where the face is way back on the stock, near the buttpad. These folks may need to move the scope back more, thus needing offset rings. Be sure you try it with the jacket, etc you usually wear hunting. Several layers of padding will make a difference.

Great suggestion from Watergoat about trying it with hunting clothing. I was crawling up on my Nikon Monarch scope on my No. 1B for years trying to get a clear field of view. Comments from this forum led me to the Ruger offset rings which finally solved the problem.

Better for you that you found out ahead of time so you can get a scope that fits the factory rings. They look so much better on the classic lines of the No. 1s. Good luck. You'll love that No. 1.

I always try my scopes out with hunting clothes on. Not because I'm a genius, but because I've been burned too many times before.

Anybody have a picture of a no. 1 with offset rings? I looked around the web for a decent picture and couldn't find one. I'm just trying to get a feel for how they will look/work on the rifle.

Thanks,

SR

There are some photos of my #1s here:

The first rifle is a 1A with a Leupold VXII 2X7. I used the double offset rings. Single offset would probably work too.

I am 5'-10" with pretty long arms.

Corbi,

Thanks for the pictures. Those are helpful. It looks like you've used the offset rings quite a bit. Ever have any issues with them? They look pretty beefy so I don't expect they would ever have any issues with recoil. I've never really trusted others' offset rings (Leupold, for instance) because they look so thin and flimsy.

On the downside, they look like they would add quite a bit of weight to the rifle. Who knew that buying a no. 1 would make my life so complicated...

I have a Leupold VXII 2-7x33 on my 6.5x55A and a VXIII 2.5-8x36 on my 257 Roberts A and neither require offset rings. I probably creep up on the scopes a little and it wouldn't hurt anything to have a single offset ring but I like low rings whenever possible and Ruger only makes a Medium height offset so I've compromised but I'm happy either way.

South_ridge, My sentiments exactly. I have trird a half dozen scopes with standard low rings on my AH. The only thing I have that will work is a 3X Leupold. I have several Leupold 3.5-10 AO and they will not do. I have one 3.5-10 non AO and it will do in shirtsleeves (both require medium rings) but not in bunting clothing. I have double extensions and believe it will work with hunting gear on.

I tried 3-9s by Burris, Bushnell 4200, Redfield, and 2.5-8 Leupold and none worked for me. Some older 4X Weavers and Lyman All-Americans worked, but worn finishes and a new rifle did not mix for me.

There was a post several month ago a showing an extension ring set that had been tapered, giving a more pleasing look. The gentleman you bought yours from uses Leupold 2.5-8s and crawls the stock. Not comfortable for me in a coat. I have decided to go either 4 or 6 fixed power or sell. Yet to decide.

Now then, I do have a neck injury that is the result of pulling my head too far back during throat (parathryoid) surgery, making my neck a bit stiffer than the average Joe.

Good luck, jack

I have used Redfield/Leupold extension rings on the front dovetail without problems. I am not sure I ever used one on the rear, jack

PS: I could get by with a thinner pad on the .25-06. jt

SR, I might also add that the rings on the 1A are medium height. As are the rings on the 375. The scope on the 375 is a VXIII 2.5X8 (my personal favorite). The off set rings are beefy but it is hard to discern any added weight from the extended rings on the rifle. Scope rings are not where I would try and reduce weight anyway.

I would send the rings to Ruger with a nice letter asking for either single offset or double offset.

Hope this helps.
