Scope height 1/2" too much?

I have several scopes to choose from to mount on a new rifle I just bought.
I like weaver rings and 50mm front objectives for most of my shooting.
Sometimes it just works out that the scope will be as much as 1/2" above the barrel.
Not so much because the rings and front objective come into play as much as stock cheek weld that I feel I need. Dose this take away from performance?

Anytime you have trouble getting a consistent cheekweld it can effect accuracy. All rings manufacturers offer rings in different heights. I always mount as low as possible without interfering with the mechanics of the gun, such as lifting the bolt handle. Other thing that can happen if you mount a scope high off the bore is you can have problems with elevation adjustment. Usually at a hundred yards or so never any problems. But if you like to dial in for longer ranges you might not have enough adjustment in the scope.

A good way to check scope height is to close your eyes and shoulder your weapon. Get a cheek weld that feels natural. Open your eyes.You should be looking through the scope or close enough that you can a full picture with only minor movement of your eye or head.

For the above reasons I like to get my scopes as low as possible - a few credit card widths is what I try for, but it's not always possible. I lean toward 40 - 44 mm scopes as it helps get the scope a bit lower.

There are strap on, stick on and various bolt on cheek pieces available that help with cheek weld.
