Saw a Sheriff's Deputy carrying an SR9 today

Today I was walking across the crosswalk when a trio of Deputies were waiting around where I was headed. Noticed one, the youngest, carrying an SR9. Almost asked him about it and why he chose it, but the parade for my town's homecoming (Diboll Day if anyone local is reading) was about to start and I needed to find my friends before it got going. One of the other Deputy's sidearm was a Glock, never caught what the 3rd was carrying. Most Deputies and Constables locally provide their own firearms that I know of. The local PD's are issued Glocks AFAIK.

First glance I thought SR9, maybe P345, but definitely an SR9 once he turned and I saw the bottom of the gun on his hip. Saw it was a blackened model and definitely not an SR9c (no compact grip or seam from the extended grip of the 17 rounder).

Seems some of the younger LEO's might favor the Ruger SR9. It's gotten some good limelight in a few publications, and for a starting LEO, the price point coupled with a discount for an LEO might be a strong factor to them.

Anyone else seen any LEO's, PD, Sheriff's Dept or Highway Patrols carrying the SR9, or other Rugers for that matter?

P85's or 89's. Can't tell without removing them from the holster and handcuffs just don't look right on me. Many carry the P series around here but some have Glocks.

I haven't seen many, but I did see a "SECURITY" officer (not sure who he was employed by) walk through a McDonald's wearing a GP100 though.

Before they started getting serious about issued duty guns, my local Sheriff's Department had a couple of guys carrying P89s. They loved them and never said anything bad about them. Myself, my Dept is pretty liberal about carry guns and I have a duty setup for my P89 in case something happens to my Glock 21 duty gun. I've never actually carried the P89 to date, though.

My son-in-law started out in law enforce with a P944 and used it up untill about 3 years ago. He went with another dept that issued Glocks. Also I know a LEO with a city PD that uses a P95, he went through the academy with it with no problems at all.

It's got 4.8 or so stars out of 5 on Police Link reviews but who knows how popular that makes it? It was reviewed well by a lot of Law Enforcement websites/mags. but then there was the recall, etc., and that might have taken some wind out of the sails in that arena. Still, most of the reviews on this page are very positive.

I myself haven't seen one carried by a LEO but I haven't looked very hard, either.

I have the feeling it's very difficult to change opinions in the Law Enforcement sales arena ... or preconceived notions about which pistol to carry, once LEOs have taken a preference to a brand/model. It's a bit of a different decision than buying one as a civilian. Police are a pretty conservative bunch (that's a good thing) and this *was*, after all, Ruger's first striker-fired pistol, and was recalled pretty quickly after it was introduced, which must have thrown some cold water on all those early positive reviews.

Maybe the new SR40 will have more penetrance in the LEO market. I'm really looking forward to seeing that gun myself.

I don't usually stare too much at police officers' guns or make a point of asking them about them, heh, ...but I'll make a point to "interestedly glance" more in the future and ask if it doesn't sound...weird.

Thanks for the link, those reviews are a little stale though, 2008-2009 is all I found.

Those are great points that did cross my mind. We'll have to see how well the SR40 is perceived by LEO's. Should be better than the SR9 since the SR9/c have seen their teething days pass. Hopefully they'll give it a shot ;).

I normally glance, but seeing the SR9 peaked my interest in asking, but figured best to not bother him. The only LEO I usually bother about firearms is my uncle :) (also happens to be a Ruger fan). Going to see if he has any interest in the SR40, his dept. issues .40 S&W.

LE agencies in Kentucky are basically married to Glock. Its a rare day that you see a copper with a Beretta or old metal frame S&W, much less anything made by Ruger. S&W did manage to equip all the game wardens with M&P's though, and the Nicholasville PD now issues the Springfield XD. When the SR40 becomes available I bet I'll see a few of them on duty.
