S&W .460

I was given the opportunity to shoot an S&W "performance" revolver chambered in .460.
The recoil was not too bad, not a lot different from H110 in a .44.
The blast was magnificent!
I'm guessing those rounds are at least $2 per?

My .44 reloads are @ $.40 each, I would imagine .460's wouldn't be too much different once you collect the cases, dies, etc., but the factory loads are very "$ignificant."

Yeah reloads are where it's at with anything but 22, 9mm and 5.56!!!

I wish Ruger would chamber it in a SRH. I've been searching for a nice 454 that isn't insane $$. I'd buy a 460 but I don't care for the Taurus RB or the X- frame Smith series.

I’ve got a TC Encore in .460 S&W with a 15” barrel. Recoil is significant because of the relative light weight of the gun. S&B 255 gr JHP are about $1.25 a pull, not bad at all.

I had a S&W .460 8 3/8" barrel XVR.
Fun to shoot, except for actually bruising my palm, until arthritis later set in my wrist.
My son and grandson are enjoying it now.
Grandson enjoying the blast.

I wanted the .460 but ended up with the .500 Magnum with the 8 3/8" barrel. It was to good of a deal to pass on with a few hundred rounds of ammo included.

Just my opinions.

The .500 has nothing going for it other than being "the biggest". Sort of a gimmick or status symbol.

Not to discredit @RugerForMe 's too good to pass up deal.

The .460 is the one to get, versatile and powerful but the X frame is just silly. You really are approaching the need for wheels! . Or better yet an actual rifle.

The .454 is the one that always intrigued me. Those old gun rags made it seem almost magical. It definitely has the nostalgia and history that I appreciate. Dick was way ahead of the times.

Plus the .454 is chambered in actual relatively normal sized guns. So it will always be King in my mind.

As a side note, I find it amusing some will brag about having the biggest and badest and how the recoil is not bad. When you can plainly see it is ported to help with recoil.

I usually let those guys fire my Airlight .357 and they cant understand how it kicks worse than their .500 S&W.

at my comfy indoor range, there's a purty Alaskan in .454 that's been flirting with me.
It's been used, but that just means "experienced," never a deal breaker.

I'm just getting the hang of reloading.44, not sure if I'm serious enough to begin with another caliber, and factory ammo prices go against my prime "hobby" dictate: have cheap fun.

Seems like an Alaskan is better to have than the $$$ it would require to gain possession?

Practical application? Nothing I can conjure would justify the purchase, especially since I already have 3 long barrel 44's that belong in the outback hunting beasts, not hunting pieces of paper stapled to cardboard as they do now.

Yet, somehow I think I should provide this Alaskan with a home.

I always though a .50 special would be the bees knees. Think of a 5 shot Ruger Bisley with 350-400 grain bullets at about 800 fps. Shouldn't kick to0 horribly, and would hit like Thors hammer!

I've shot a few thousand rounds out of the Linebaughs at that level. Very pleasant
