Ruger RimFire competition question

Just wondering. The Cowboy/Cowgirl division info calls for a lever or pump action rifle so a bolt action rifle can not be used?
If no bolt action rifles, what is the favorite 22 rifle used?

COWBOY/COWGIRL: Single action revolvers and period lever or pump action rifles with iron sights. All competitors in COWBOY/COWGIRL CLASS must wear a cowboy hat in competition.

Well, if it says lever or pump then ahh, yeah, it's either a lever or pump action allowed. After all it's called the cowboy/cowgirl division. Not many of those westerns with bolt actions I can think of.
I would say the Henry was a popular make in that class.

You could also use a Marlin 39 or Winchester 9422.

Don't forget the model 90 and 62 winchesters. Rossi made a fairly robust copy of them as well. As far as popular? The Marlin 39/39A is the one I see the most of near me at shoots, followed by the Henry.

I shot a Marlin 39A for years and years before it was confiscated by a glib talking buddy and a stack of FRN$ that was so tall it was too embarrassing to leave laying on the table....


....but I've never seen 'bolt-action' in any SASS or cowboy matches as that is not in their list of allowed firearms.

My wife is the one intrigued with this competition.
Right now we are waiting for the 2013 event calendar to include an event we can observe somewhere close to us.

Easy first lever choice for me now would be a Henry - second another early Winchester 9422 (like I once had).

For pumps I used Winchester 1890's and 1906's. Later after my ex wife wore out her 1906 she had an early Rossi 62SA, and it was a great little rifle.

Going to visit and see what the others are shooting is the best way to figure out what you should get. Also most competitors will probably be happy to talk to you about their experiences with different guns they have owned.
