If there's one subject that will get posts flowing in a multitude of varying opinions, it involves "compensators" and how well they perform on a .22 rimfire caliber weapon, of any kind. There has been more "bovine excrement" thrown up against the whirling blades of a very BIG fan than any other subject involving .22 rimfire guns.
Some of the commercially available compensators have holes that go all the way around the periphery of the compensator. Think about that. How the hell is that supposed to be a workable advantage, with holes venting gas that work against all the other holes?
I've been working with and experimenting on, "compensators", not muzzle brakes, since 1993 for .22 rimfire pistols. What I have found is, the venting holes need to be able to vent the expanding gasses from a fired .22 rimfire round in an appropriate direction that's able to offer a means to counteract muzzle rise. The holes need to vent gases upward and not all around the compensator, or be humongous slots that can't offer a jetting action of those expanding gasses. And, there are gasses involved with a .22 rimfire round that can be taken advantage of.
The gas collection chamber size is also important. If that chamber allows the gas to follow the bullet out of the muzzle, no compensating action is created. The gas needs to collect in the chamber then find its way up and out of the proper diameter holes that will use that expanding gas to counteract muzzle flip.
As soon as all the white stuff engulfing my shooting bench goes away, I want to try my little video camera to see if i can photograph the gas venting action of a properly manufactured .22 rimfire compensator.
