Would that box be what a 1956 vintage 4-5/8 357 Blackhawk resided in when new?

It's for any 4 5/8" 357 gun built and shipped after the 6.5" and 10" were introduced in Early 1959. Dougan states around serial number 21,000. The serial number on the side comes off fairly easily. Good price.

What do you use to remove the SN without damaging the box?

Start with a damp and warm washcloth. If that isn't enough a VERY VERY small amount of this stuff on the damp washcloth. It works really good at getting off sticker or tape residue as well.
...anything that will not "abrade" the 'gloss' finish of the paper coating.........
I can’t tell from the photo, but can you give the date on the instruction manual, please.
I have found that OLD formula of Hoppe's #9 on a rag gets the number off very easily and leaves a smell that is normal around guns. After lightly rubbing the number off, I lightly wipe the rest of the box to make everything even. After the "wet" wipe, I go over it all again with a dry rag. What you are getting off was applied with a "grease pencil" or sometimes called a "china marker". The NEW formula of #9 does not seem to work as well. Have tried Goo Gone and find #9 a bit better. Hope this helps.
I use Kroil, it's what I use to clean and wipe down all my guns and it takes it right off.
And Kroil has LOTS of other fine uses too. A great product every firearms enthusiast should have a can.
