So, I just bought one and it looked like it was hardly used BUT - slight ding on forearm and a chip out of the stock by the receiver. Like I said, all the wood looks like it was never used except for the above. Had a scope base, two-piece, with no scope mounted and no factory sights :-( I have four scope mount holes I need to plug but not sure what size of plug to use? Then I'm trying to replace the sights with something decent, any suggestions? Do the 10/22 sights fit this little beauty, they sure look similar? Little things drive me crazy - like the wood, so I'm thinking of changing over to No 1 wood? I can get a stock for a decent price but it has to be fitted, I'm great at re-finishing (if I do say so myself) but I'm hesitant to try and fit it to the action. I suppose I could just bite the bullet and send it to Ruger but I'm not sure they do all this or not?

A couple of things; First you are in luck if you want to replace your stock. Lots of guys made exquisite stocks for the number three. Ebay always has "rough in" stocks that are available. I would not use a take off Number One stock because you can probably find one a lot better that is custom made for the same price. Unless of course you get a real good deal on a "1" stock.
Secondly, stock guys can repair your damaged stock. Usually carve out a little piece of wood from the inside and match it up and glue it in place. If the person is good, you will NEVER be able to tell. Of course you will because you will know where it is, but the casual viewer will usually not see it.
Good luck.
Ok, how about posting some pictures!

Welcome to the forum!

What caliber is your No. 3? And how do you intend to use the rifle - hunt? shoot paper? If it's a 45-70 then the original carbine stock doesn't allow a person to handle the recoil very well. With the other calibers I personally like the carbine stock - others don't.

I have a few of the No. 3s around here so I'll dig one out and let you know the filler screw info. I'll be out this evening, but if someone else doesn't chime in I'll get you the info.

Hey thanks guys, my #3 is in .223 caliber. I'm going to do a search now for the stocks as suggested and I'll get back with ya'll on that. Now, as to pics, I did a boo boo - beginner's mistake, took the forearm down and lost the dang bushing (which I just hurriedly ordered from Brownells), however, I'm working on taking the pic as we speak :-)
