With all the bad service experience out there (including mine) it is only fair to note a positive experience with Ruger’s Srvice Dept. This is my second very positive, pleasant experience with Ruger’s Service Dept in Newport, NH. :P
I sent the following info to them in July 2011:
My Series 182 (~1981, purchased in 1983) typically would group ~8 inches at 100 yds. I was active duty USN at the time so I really did not shoot much at all until ~2008.
During the years;
- installed a ~1 in. Buttplate extension to make Length of Pull = 13-3/4 in. [I'm 6 ft, the original 12-3/4 in. LoP was unsat.]
- added plastic plastic resin to the rear peep sight plate to prevent it from wobbling around.
- installed a 'Recoil Buffer'.
- Installed XS Systems. '24/7' Tritium Front Sight.
- I had read on the forum that the Mini-14s badly needed Receiver 'bedding.' A trial run using duck tape did yield smaller groups - did a 'Bedding' Job.
The 100 yd groups came down to ~3 to 4 inches :-)) The bedding has had the most significant effect to date on reducing group size.
I also noted a slight ‘crack’ appearance on the Gas Block (could not tell for sure.)
Around mid to end of July 2011, via Service Manager Chris Peters, Ruger performed:
- Replaced Gas Block, Bushing & 'Pipe'.
- Re-torqued and staked the Gas Block machine screws.
- Replaced Recoil Spring (losses strength over time.)
- Reworked Bolt and Slide. Straitened Slide. Aligned Slide and Gas Block.
- Replaced Stock (gray / black laminate) and handgaurd.
- Matte finished all metal SS. (My request, was bright Satinless.)
- Replaced Rear Sight Assy (alum.), changed to a different height peep to accommodate different weight projectiles.
Ruger factory 50 yd 3 shot group w/ 68 gr. Hornady over sandbags = 3/4 in.
Chris noted that sometimes 40 Gr. ('V-MAX') works well, sometimes the 55 gr. Soft Point Flat-Tail and sometimes the 55 gr. Boat-Tail.
Buffer will change the recoil speed. Sometimes it changes accuracy for the better, sometimes not - have to experiment.
Recommend lube is Breakfree exclusively. Ran a 'Rust Test' experiment few years back - Breakfree won. WD-40 dries and flakes off!! Grease over time can get more 'solid'.
As received it is a ‘knock-out’ – an even matte grayish finish on all SS with laminated gray/black stock. In depth range time is still needed.
