With the Ruger GSR a hot topic...do members think Ruger will be open to mods? Some on this board think Ruger will be offering the GSR in other calibers/left handed models. For myself the single stack magazines...which can not be "topped off" without pulling the mag is the deal breaker for me. Would others like myself want the rifle offered with a blind/internal...drop floorplate? We all know you can top those off as you go. If Ruger choses not to make this mod....I am looking at the Ruger Compact Magnum..in 308...just half an inch diff in length...and lighter as well. Add a NECG peep...forego the forward rail...and be good to go. I just have not been able to find anything on the barrel weight....hoping it is heavier contour than the Ruger RSI..308...opinions?

Ever hear of changing the magazine? I know its a difficult concept to grasp, but bear with me here. When you shoot enough to warrant reloading the firearm, you just push the little button in front of the trigger and remove the magazine then reach into your pack or other suitable storage device and grab a fresh magazine and insert it into the rifle, voila! You are ready to go.

In the event you don't have extra magazines, you can very easily reload the one that was in the rifle. Somehow I believe this is easier than trying to fumble around reloading through the top of the firearm, after shooting Rugers for many years, I do like the removable magazine.

hummm changing the magazine...now why didnt I think of that???
somehow when I read your response...and I did read it more than once....it always comes across as sarcasum. I know I asked for opinons...but sarcasum??? I guess the concept that I did not.do not want a single stack mag...in a bolt action...was missed in your reading.

I think its funny that no matter what, there are some people that are perpetual nitpickers and will find one thing they don't like and gripe about it. ;)

If you don't like the magazine, the answer is very simple. Get one of the Frontier "scout" rifles. Has the forward mounted scope mount just like the Gunsite rifle, but with internal magazine.

"Nitpicking"? On many boards the discussion often comes around to Rugers choice of magazine...with the common question of why not accept M14 mags. I am not alone in this so called "nitpicking" On this very board..under the topic "Ruger's Scout rifle..there are comments about roughness of the bolt....why was that not "nitpicking"?. As far as to your comment of changing magazines...my experince with the CZ 527 single stack mags..is that is is much quicker to top off than change. Now my M1A...does have the magazines that can be topped off....ever hear of "stripper clips"...sorry I am slipping down to your level.
If the Frontier came with iron sights...and I could find one..it would be excellant...hince my interest in the Ruger Compact Magnum.....this I have not seen in person..hoping someone here on this board would/could give me some feedback on it....instead of getting negative comments

I like the GSR and the two I have handled have been very appealing rifles. I did not notice any particular roughness in manipulation of the bolt. While I am a bit perplexed as to why they did not utilize the M14 magazine, there must have been some design or marketing reason for it. In any case, it would not be a deal breaker for me and I will probably wind up acquiring one.

RS, I have one of the compact magnum 308's of which you speak. It has 4 more inches of barrel but no flashhider. The barrel on it is much lighter in contour than the GS. However, like you suggested, one could add a peep sight and load from the top and forget about the rail and the detachable magazine. The CM is a really nice rifle in its own right. I have a 1.5 x4.5 Bushnell on mine, a short, compact scope which matches the rifle. I also have 2 (10) round mags for the GS rifle if and when thay become available again. Bob!

I wonder how a M70 or 98 Mauser with controlled round feed works with a staggered magazine? Bob!

Thank You...rangerbob...from rugers spec sheet..the GSR and the CM are very close to overall size and weight....the CM did appear to have a lighter contour....just hopefully....not as slender as what came on the Ruger RSI 308s...I appreciate your comments..

Was wondering that, myself. :) (Or a Ruger 77 Hawkeye, for that matter.)

I've read that the reason they went with ASI mags instead of M14 mags is tolerances and reliability. They found too much variation in M14 mags. They all wouldn't all work reliably. The tolerances for the ASI mags were much closer, and they could get them to work 100%.

Ditmo...I read that from another site.....think it was a comment by Ruger at the Shot show....and as a M1a owner...I am aware that there are many m14 mags out there that are not worth a crap....however....I have only USGI m14mags...and they work flawlessly.....and since CMI...is currently on contract to fullfill uncle sams needs for m14 mags...for the boys in the sandboxes...the prospect of very reliable m14 mgs is still very viable....imagine the flexiblity of 5/10/20 round mags...5 round mag would be for all intents...a flush magazine....for a neat tidy package....with the option for a twenty round....hanging down no farther than the factory ten...and least we all forget.....Ruger did come out with there version of the AR....and loe and behold ...it will function fine with GI m16 mags....hummm

ROA,

I agree with you. I've got a M1A as well. I wonder if they didn't want the bad rap that the Mini-14 has gotten with all the junk mags out there. Just a thought. I went through a lot of different ones before I ponied up and bought factory mags.

It would be nice to have a flush fitting 5 round mag in the GSR. My only Rosie O'Donnell with my CZ527 carbine is the mag sticking down and only being 5 rounds.

Ditmo....sir....did learn that lesson myself.....with the m14 mags.....and it probably is not fair to the Ruger GSR....but like you...my experince with the inline mags of the CZ527....has put me off that design....
