Ruger GSR: Walnut Stock & Stainless

I was at Cabela's today and saw two GSR's side by side. At first I wasn't sure if the walnut stock rifle was in fact a GSR!

It was the same length, had the same detachable box magazine, as well as the standard Ruger flash hider in a blued finish. The receiver & barrel happen to bein stainless as opposed to the typical GSR.

Interestingly, the price difference was $70 in favor of the stainless version. Unfortunately, Cabela's had it marked at $899....no thanks I'll pass on it and keep the one I already have which I picked up for $625.

Has anyone else seen a GSR like this?

They've all got 680- prefixes, except for the very first run which was serial numbered with a 711- prefix right along with all the Hawkeye rifles.
Well...since it was stainless, and Ruger doesn't currently offer them here in the United States (I've only seen them advertised for Australia and Germany), you may have passed on a pretty rare rifle!!
The full sn is important on this and with that you could call the Ruger factory to see what model it shipped as.
Remember also that so far, the stainless versions sold in Australia and Germany do not have a flash suppressor on the end of the barrel and the barrel length is a full 18".
One stainless gun that showed up at a New Hampshire gun shop has a 16-1/2" barrel with flash suppressor.
Then there's the stainless gun that showed up on GB recently that also is stainless with 16-1/2" barrel and flash suppressor and had a 711- prefix.
I think there's times when the employees at Ruger don't know exactly what's being put in the box before the gun is shipped. But then, there are few there who easily recognize such things as it is just a job to them. Would be the same thing as noting a rolling parts change in a Whirlpool washing machine for example.

Another thought on the stainless gunsiite rifle you saw. Heard recently that Cabelas got in a batch of several hundred "used" guns and now I'm wondering if they didn't errantly ship a few stainless gunsite rifles with this (kinda like the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing sometimes???). This also explains why cabelas got a 265- prefixed Single-Ten revolver when they should have all been 810- prefixed.

Keep on that rifle!!

Most of my rifles are stainless, but in this case I strongly prefer the look of the blued version. You can't argue with the use of stainless in a utilitarian rifle like the GSR, though, so I have been watching for these and I plan to pick up the first one I come across.

No concrete information on availability of the stainless model but one thing we know for sure is that this version was sold in Australia first.

I do realize that this may have been a once in a blue moon kind of find.....but since I have a GSR already that I'm absolutely happy with, I just couldn't bring myself to shell out that much for another rifle.

Hopefully, another member here will find this useful & pick it up.

On a side note, I picked up an unissued Mosin Nagant for $87. It's still packed in cosmoline, has 2 ammo pouches, sling, cleaning kit, & bayonet! It wasn't a total loss, :P

They said they had a few of each the normal laminate and these. This was the last one that store had. I paid a little much of course being Cabelas but now that we have heard from Jason we know that was the only place I was going to get it.

Had been thinking about a GSR for a while, as soon as the employee handed it to me I knew I was buying. The feel/balance of the GSR is great.

OK...the story is, cabelas got 100 stainless guns, originally ordered with a laminate stock but Ruger put walnut on them (%Jason @ Lipsey's).
So do these have a 16-1/2" barrel with flash suppressor, or 18" barrel without suppressor?

Quick measure of mine says 16.5 barrel plus flash suppressor although not dead on 16.5.

Wow, that's an interesting combo! The one I posted the link to on gunbroker looks more like the Australian version with a laminate stock. So now there are three versions out there.
