Ruger AR 556

Has anyone had their bolt jam in the closed position? It won't move. Never been fired. Thanks.

YES!! Mine was returned to the retailer. Tap the butt on a carpeted surface and try it again. That cleared it for me, but it continued to have the problem. If you call Ruger they will have you return it. I would try the retailer first.

My experience with Ruger's customer service has been so good that it almost makes me look forward to needing it again. My experience with run of the mill gun smiths?...not so good.
Give Ruger a call, you'll be glad you did...that's what I'm saying.

Could not agree more. Best service experiences, bar none, have been with Ruger.

I have contacted Ruger. They suggest I shoot the rifle, 30-60 rounds, and see if that takes care of the problem, They say it will not void the warranty and if it still malfunctions to send it to them.
I could also try shooting the one that isn't giving me any problems and then switch bolts to see what happens.
I probably won't get to shoot till next week.

Is the bolt locked up into the barrel extension with no cartridge chambered, or is it locking up with a cartridge in the chamber?

If you get it apart, clean the chamber/locking lug area (back side of the lugs in the extension, and also the locking lugs on the bolt.

If you are familiar with lubing the lugs on a bolt action, would suggest lightly lubricating the back of the lugs on the bolt and seeing if this get better after you clean and lube the lug area. There could be burs or debris in those areas that are effecting lock-up.

If the problem persists it could be a tolerance problem on the machining of the barrel extension, the bolt or a combination of the carrier and bolt causing things to lock up. Possibly why the asked you to try a different bolt or bolt and carrier.

I'd try the different bolt in the current carrier, followed by a different bolt carrier and different bolt combination, as that could isolate the issue. If it all still is way to tight, there could be a problem with how the extension was machined or installed on the barrel.

If you have a set of go/no-go gauges you could also confirm they headspaced the extension to the barrel correctly.

I just shot mine yesterday for the first time, no issues at all. I shot about 70 rounds at most, I hope it doesnt start doing what you are describing, Did you take it apart and clean and oil it first?

Although bought mine back in the fall of 2014 and had no problems my friend got one recently. Field stripped and cleaned before shooting and noticed some sticky stuff in there that sort of smelled petroleum in nature. Figured it was shipping anti rust stuff. I could see some guns getting more than others and gumming things up.
