Im looking at buying a ruger american in.270 and was wondering if anyone has the american in any caliber and if you like the rifle how it shoots and overall how you like it.

Thanks Scott

Have a .30-06 here.
Printed two 5/8-inch 3-shot groups at 100 yards with two different loads, can generally hold at an inch or under.

Dislike the Glock trigger-in-a-trigger & the detachable polymag, but otherwise it's light for carry & with a decent scope (new Redfield on this one) I think it makes a good hunting gun.

I have two 30-06's. Both are great shooters. I like the trigger and attribute some of the accuracy to the bed system they use. Both of mine will shoot in the 1/2" neighborhood with 165's and 180's using Varget, IMR 4064 and especially RL15. IMR 4350 is a also good choice, just not quite as good as the others. I don't push the speed with my reloads, but they are more than capable hunting loads. As far as factory ammo, they really like the Fiocchi 165 Match King rounds.

My only concerns are the very loose retaining pin on the bolt release and the fact that I have not figuired out how to "properly" disassemble the bolt for a good cleaning and oiling.

I have talked some friends into buying them and they like them as well as I do. I will buy another.

Ruger's still undecided about whether they want you disassembling the bolt. It uses an interlocking system between body, handle, and firing pin to hold it all together & they're not sure they want people to be doing that.

Denis,

Looking at the parts diagram, I can see the relationship you describe. Maybe they will let us know how it is done - properly. Until then, I will just try to keep it clean and lubed inside.

That's one of the downsides of the design. The bolt's innovative & works well, but you shouldn't have to take it to a gunsmith for cleaning.
Hopefully Ruger'll cut loose with some instructions eventually.

got an RAR in .308 this weekend and shot it yesterday side by side with my Savage Edge in .308. Got a 1&1/8" 4 shot group with PPU168GM ammo. The Edge shot a 15/16" four shot group with WW Supreme 150G ballistic tips. Just ordered some Fed Fusion ammo as I read elsewhere that it shot well in the RAR. Will also have to try the Fiocchi.
