I came into the room the other day while an old Roy Rogers movie was on. In the scene he was having to put down a horse, using a rifle. The rifle was a Winchester Model 92 Short Rifle, with capped forend.

In the scene, as he shouldered the rifle, he cradled the forend sort of making a "V" wth his thumb and index finger, index finger pointing toward the muzzle and sort of alongside the magazine tube and barrel. I believe at one point his hand was actually beyond the forend cap.

Interesting grip. Roy Rogers was no stranger to guns.

Hi,

No, he sure wasn't. He was a regular at our trap and skeet range in the late '60s-early '70s. That was right when I was in college, and I never got to meet him, though our clubhouse was plastered with pictures from some of his visits...

As he grew older, he didn't come down the hill to shoot much, if at all, but remained a regular at the Apple Valley Gun Club much closer to home for him. Guys I knew from that club said he was a pretty good shotgunner even then. That on top of his rifle/pistol abilities. And a really nice guy on top of all that according to friends who knew him!

If you want to shoot a lever gun fast (like 10 rounds in 2-3 seconds) this is the way you hold it. It also works for shooting slower Your hand on the forearm and barrel is pulling the rifle into your shoulder. All your other hand dose is cycle and pull the trigger.
Notice how close together the two shells in the air are. :D The others are probably on his hat

I enjoy Roy Rogers stories, still watch his movies. When my wife signed up for Amazon Prime one of the first things I searched for was his movies.
