Rounds not feeding

I have a Mark III Hunter, many times the first round from the mag will not feed. This may be an ammo brand issue. Has anyone else had this problem?

Could be a magazine issue! Maybe the gap between the magazine feed lips is be too tight and not allowing the first round to be stripped from the mag at the proper angle.

I think that may be it, you gave me good pictures and appears to be my problem. Any suggestions other than prying the lips apart.

I would “gently” use a pair of pliers and slightly widen the gap between the two front lips. I did that to a couple of my mags and it really helped….just don’t bend them too far apart. You may need to increase the gap in the two rear lips also.

Before tweaking it:

Are you sure you only have 10 rounds in the mag?

you need to watch how the first round sits before putting the mag in the pistol....
shoot a couple of rounds and remove the magazine and see how the next round is supposed to sit in the mag. to feed right... then make sure your 'first' round is always like that.

try it with only 9 rounds in the mag.

keep in mind your problem is with the first round, the rest work fine which means somehow it is most likely a 'manual' problem... not a problem with the gun or magazine.

don't 'feed' the round off the magazine into the chamber.... let the bolt release do it.... the bolt slamming the the round into the chamber is more natural than slowly feeding the bolt forward.

That feed presentation occurs on a couple of my mags when loaded with 10 rounds. Loading only 9 alleviates the problem as does locking the bolt back before seating the mag.

Call Ruger and they will send you a replacement magazine. problem solved.

The magazine safety is possibly at fault too. It's a lot more work to seat the magazine fully and squarely with it functional. I have three mags for mine and none of them have done this. The only mag issue I had was before I disabled the mag safety the first time I smacked the mag to get it to seat and it flew apart (bottom came off and spring flew out). If memory serves, this happened BEFORE it ever fired a shot. If the mag isn't in ALL the way because of the MS, it's likely to cause a first round feed issue. Unlikely but possible the mag seats the rest of the way when the first round is out of the way and the elevator spring is not pushing as hard.

What I always do after loading the mag is to just hook my finger under the nose of the top round and give it a lift up, never have issues when I do that.

I've seen this with several new mags. It got better with continued use or inserting mag with bolt open.
