I have started the process to return my new Mini 14 to Ruger for service. The return instructions I received from Ruger state: " If the trigger pull of my firearm is below the factory minimum, it will be brought back to factory standards.
You have my permission: __________*" I have paid for a trigger tune by Brimstone Gunsmithing. If I do not give my permission, will Ruger refuse to work on my rifle? Does anyone have experience with this situation?

Thank you,
Pete Angelakos

Might help to know why you are returning. I do not have personal experience with this type of situation, but depending on what trigger pull poundage you are at, or if any visible work was done on it, you MAY get your trigger group replaced.

From my experience Ruger takes all returns to factory specs before they send them back to you, for safety reasons(and likely lawyer reasons). As far as I know they always have. New thing to see them ask for permission...if you have any aftermarket parts, it would be best to replace with the original parts before sending it back...good luck

I'd suggest you call the service center and ask... also ask if you can send all but the trigger group.

Good luck.

I have already called the service center. They want the entire rifle including the magazine. They were vague about "returning the rifle to factory specs" -- said they need to see what modifications had been made. As I understand now, they need my permission to "return to factory specs" which I will not give. They can just return the rifle to me as is and I will pay a competent gunsmith to repair it.

Thanks,
Pete

If Ruger decides that your modified gun is not safe to shoot, they may not return it as-is.
After all...once it's in their hands, they have assumed at least some measure of liability....which they probably aint going to want.

I'm not saying that your gun is unsafe.....I'm just sayin' that your safety standards aint their safety standards.

If you don't give permission, it will simply be returned to you without anything being done to the weapon, including what you want.

I learned this MANY years ago when I sent a re-chambered #1 back for something that had nothing to do with that. My choice was a new factory barrel and the required work OR back to me unaltered. To the best of my knowledge that's always been policy and if THEY actually think your gun is unsafe you may well get a NEW one but not your "Unsafe" gun back.

Failure to eject (FTE) and ejected brass hitting scope.
Not quite sure I follow--if it is failing to eject--how is ejected brass hitting your scope? Anyways--not being familiar with this weapon--I would guess you have something going on with your ejector spring and/or extractor. Your spent cases should show some unusual signs if so. If it's an "every now and then" kinda thing might be a number of other things.

Same here. I'd like to know the details: exactly what the brass is doing, what type of scope, how it is mounted, etc. Usually a stock from the box Mini is way over gassed at the gas port and cycles so hard it will send the brass into the next county. What yours is doing sounds really unusual which makes it really interesting. :)

It will come back to you as it was BEFORE you had the trigger job done..

If you wont give permission, and I wouldnt either, dont bother sending it in. Just find as you said "the competent gunsmith" and forget Ruger.

I am very happy to report that most of you were wrong concerning Ruger service. I just received my mini and the packing slip states: "New complete bolt, gas piston, repaired slide." I will visit the range next week for a test.
To be clear, this rifle was returned to Ruger with two major modifications: 1) a Mo-Reaper Muzzle Brake and 2) a trigger tune by Brimstone Gunsmithing. Both items were returned without modification. This service cost me nothing but time (about two weeks including transit). Ruger paid shipping both ways. Needless to say, I am a happy camper!!

That is great news!!!
And just for the record, I don't mind being wrong. Actualy, I'm rather glad that I was. :D .

Looking forward to a good range report, so keep us posted.

I submit that your trigger job was assessed and determined that it still met factory specifications.

As a member of the forum, when asked about something that I have knowledge, I will provide my opinion based on my experience.

In my opinion, had your trigger group not functioned within the factory standards, they would not have returned the rifle to you in that condition.

I base my opinion on having completing the Factory Armor course twice. Earlier this year, I retired from an Agency that used the Mini-14 as it's primary weapon. I worked in the Armory and serviced all the Mini's that were in use. I returned over thirty Mini's to the factory for evaluation during the 7 years that I was assigned to the Armory.

It is good that you got your rifle back and you are happy.

That has always been my experience when dealing with Ruger customer service. They are outstanding! :D
