Replacement SBH grips

New here, but I've been lurking a long time. I never joined because in view of the knowledge here, I just didn't have anything to add but now I have a question.

I have an SBH, with a 6 1/2 in bbl, on which one of the grips, which has been reglued several times, has finally broken for good. This gun has a history and is special to me and I want to keep it as original as I can so what do I do about replacement grips? Should I call the factory, have some made, or what?

welcome to the forum, and congrats on your first post! the way i see it, your grips are "the" original grips, and they are damaged. i would get a sweet set of caryc grips, and never look back!

So is it a New Model or Old Model. Makes a difference in price. Also if old model ruger doesn't have any.
Don't think very many Old or New Model Supers came with a 61/2" barrel.
Lots of Ruger grips are on Ebay and Gunbroker.

Really? That's a rare gun! Super's have been cataloged with 4-5/8", 5-1/2", 7-1/2" and 10-1/2" barrels.

Describe the grips on the gun. Walnut? Black Eagle Medallions? Silver Eagle Medallions? Shiny Silver Eagle Medallions?

Is the gun an Old Model or New Model? New Model's are rollmarked New Model.

It is an Old Model and came with a 61/2 inch barrel. I don't know anything about medallions but these are about the size of a dime and shiny silver with a black eagle?? inside. I'm not interested in changing anything on it and the stocks are what appears to be oil finished plain walnut.

I bought the gun new in 1966 and carried it while serving as a rifle platoon leader in VN. It's pretty beat up but has never been shot much. Combat's hard on people and weapons. Possibly I can order grips w/out medallions from the factory or maybe someone can suggest a stockmaker than can make a set for me and use my medallions?

Well let me tell ya. The 61/2" Supers are pretty rare only about 600 made.
Sounds like yours has a lot of great stories to tell for sure.
What I would do is post in the Classified what you want. To be the correct grips they need to be the black eagle oiled Walnut Super grips with a blue screw and blue screwie in things. Can't remember what the hell those parts are called. The Super grips are a different size than all the rest of Ruger grips.
Like I said you can also watch ebay. If I had a spare pair I would damn sure sell them to you at REALLY cheap price. Just for what ya did at the time ya did it in a country far far away.
That old warhorse needs the correct grips. No Fancy showie ones for it IMHO

As has been mentioned, there are a few of us here on the Ruger Forum that can make you replacement grip panels. Reusing your medallions is not a big deal or we can supply new ones of the same design. I've got plenty of plain walnut on hand that I could use to make a pair of grips similar to your originals for a modest price (not listed on my website).

rifleman harris, THANK you first off, and you are now the 3rd serviceman we know of that 'carried" a Ruger Super BH while serving in VN.....neat

yes, that gun being one of the rare ones ( I just picked up one last week for my dealer/collector,Bill, and its in the 25,26x range, MINT shape to boot)so it would behove you to put 'er back in its "original shape, nothing wrong with ordering and using some custom grips and we got some guys here ,like said above, who make some awesome grips, but I still would replace / repair the ones from the gun..... we got a guy over here who may be able to repair your grips, so do not throw them away, send 'em to us, and we'll see what can actually be done for you.....
and yes, the same, exact style,era grips can be found "on line" as well as at mosr gun shows, ,sadly I just sold the last two pairs we had over here, last show..............in fact I got Don on the phone right now and he said he'd be able to help you out, may even take the 'hardware out (off) of YOUR grips and put them ( the medallions and the escutcheons) on another pair of NICE SBH grip panels.....let us know....just to let you know, Don said to relate to you, he too has a 'cased' Super that was sold to him, and was carried by a serviceman in the mideast, in the early 1960's.......neat suff

I am sure I have a pair of SBH grips of the correct vintage. That being simple black painted eagles with oiled walnut. That gun and it owner deserve a good set of grips. Give me until tomorrow (so I can go home and look at my many spares) and I will send them to you at no cost. Just appreation to a vet. The RF is full of old and young vets and a few active duty but most all of the members respect their contributions. But we want to see a picture of your old war horse.
