My Cousin's step Daughter's wedding was Saturday evening and since I've become sort of the "Grandfather figure" of the family my attendance was mandatory. It was pretty warm so I just wore a nice Magellan vented shirt and black jeans with matching belt and boots. Grouch Attack was dressed "comfortably but not slouchy". The rest of my family who attended the ceremony came wearing nice but "casual" clothes.
I was surprised when most of the groom's family showed up looking like they'd just cleaned out the barn. His Dad had on a seed corn cap with sunglasses stuck on the back, cargo shorts, a wrinkled and somewhat scruffy button front shirt, and work boots not laced up.
Now I can understand a bit of "theme" dressing but this was just sloppy. Guess it went along with the fact that the ceremony was performed in the SWINE barn at the county fair grounds.
At the post wedding meal, my family occupied an entire table, our kids were quiet and well behaved, and no one was swilling beer. Those who did have a beer, went to the back of the room. The rest of the crowd which was mostly comprised of the step Daughter's (birth) Father's family and the Groom's drinking buddies were well into the alcohol by the time supper was over. Our table sat and talked a bit and began to filter out as the music and party jokes got too loud to continue conversation.
All in all, I felt it was distasteful at best. I certainly wish the best for the newly weds but simply can't understand the atmosphere of the wedding.

You need to go to a Polish wedding? About the same, but dressed like your family Mobuck. The Polish love the alcohol, and dance til they can’t! Good luck to the betrothed!

.

My advice:

You can't change other people, but you can change the way you think about them...….. :)

They were obviously happy, which (in a wedding for one) is all that counts.

Well,he had a button-front shirt at least.

I've been to some Irish wakes and funerals...some of 'em were boozing it up,lol.

I smell trouble coming in River city. Know how to tell the groom at a polish wedding? He`s the one with the clean bowling shirt. Had a uncle that would buy a new pair of shoes for a wedding and return them the next day.

Daughters wedding was this weekend too. Lots of rednecks there, but we were all pretty formal - nobody dressed out of place. Over 200 people, all you can eat BBQ and open bar, DJ, etc. Went through 6 kegs and about a dozen bottles of the hard stuff and everyone stayed civil. Only incident was towards the end when the DJ let a requested trashy song slip through and I made him pull it. Some squawking from a few of the kids and he said "take it up with the father of the bride" and that was that.

We had our own cop (real one, not private) for security and he was wearing TWO guns - one on each hip, one pointing forward and the other back. Never seen that before. Not exactly what you would call a high threat environment so I don't know what that was all about but he was friendly and courteous.

Being Polish, I attended many Polish weddings and the men all wore suit and ties and the women were formally dressed. I never saw anyone in casual dress. However, you are absolutely correct about the dancing and alcohol consumption. A good time was had by all, except for the ones who passed out before the wedding reception was over. :)

When my grandson got married, my wife and I were dressed appropriately for the extremely hot weather, but his grandmother and her husband looked like they just stepped out of a horse stable. Everyone else was somewhat appalled, but my grandson was gracious. I kept my mouth shut, too. We kidded with my middle son, saying that Lori was expecting. He almost dropped his glass and said "I'm moving to Kansas!"

Weddings these days, ya just can't never tell! mmmmmmmm...........Maybe I just thought I was a redneck! When my son got married, for the third time, it was mandated that all the guys would wear NEW jeans, a white shirt and red tie. I was partially excused and was allowed red suspenders!

Its been said that the difference between an Irish wedding and an Irish wake is that there's one less drunk at the wake.

Try a Russian Jewish wedding. Everyone dressed but the vodka started with toasts (shots) for the men before the wedding. Lots of dancing and music.
I’ve been to barn weddings too. Dress was a bit more casual but not sloppy. Plenty of beer flowing. At least no one got out of control.
My own daughters weddings I didn’t drink anything other than the champagne toast.

I went to a wedding last week in the Bootheel and I swear that between the bride and groom they didn't have a full set of teeth...the bride's mother is a meth-head and her Dad is a strange old coot.

The groom's parents are both mental...

However, there were no fights....
