I have seen the 44 specials in both Red and Gray Plastic boxes. Is there any reason for this? Or do they just grab a box at the factory and ship it?

I think that the grey box is for the classic New Model Blackhawk from Ruger's normal catalog. The grey box is the normal production run.

I think that the red box is for the special run of the flattop Blackhawks. The red box denotes the special edition.

The red could just be an old anniversary box they wanted to use up. Does it have an empty recess where an anniversary sticker should go right on top? That's how my Single Six Hunter came.

Nope... I have one of the first 1,000 from Lipsey's and it came in a grey box marked correctly.

Let us add to the confusion.

I have a black box for a Vaquero Convertible.
It was made in 2002.
What does that mean?

I believe it is still Pioneer Plastics (now Arizona Roto-Mold) in the Phoenix area that supplies the hinged boxes. I'm surprised someone hasn't done a 'dumpster-diving' trip to collect their discards. Who knows what colors may be in there...!

So far green, red, black, grey...

Most of these black boxes also say "Special Edition" on the lid. Does yours?
Many of Ruger's special distributor models were shipped in black "special edition" boxes. If it doesn't have the tag saying that, it probably shoud have.
