I have seen the 44 specials in both Red and Gray Plastic boxes. Is there any reason for this? Or do they just grab a box at the factory and ship it?

I think that the red box is for the special run of the flattop Blackhawks. The red box denotes the special edition.

I have a black box for a Vaquero Convertible.
It was made in 2002.
What does that mean?

Most of these black boxes also say "Special Edition" on the lid. Does yours?
Many of Ruger's special distributor models were shipped in black "special edition" boxes. If it doesn't have the tag saying that, it probably shoud have.
