I got some Red dot powder this week end and 6.2 grs with 255 gr LSWC shot better than any load I have tried. (unique close 2nd 8.1 grs) Gonna try Green dot and HP 38

.45 Colt?
Green Dot is is nice, never tried Red Dot, HP-38 leaves a lot of unburned powder in light loads and has very low load density.
Clays and Universal are my go to powders in light and heavy loads, respectively.

Clays and Universal did pretty good with my .45colts but HS-6 has been GREAT. It will be replacing a few powders.

I too have been having great luck with HS-6. It shoots very well in 44 Special, 44 Magnum, and 45 Auto for the loads I use.

I have experimented with powder this year. RED DOT works well in 44 magnum at around 7.0 grains with the MIHEC clone of 429421...custom moulds in group buy section at castboolits. There is a version of RED DOT called PROMO...check charge weight when you use the other type; difference in bulk...that sells for around $90 per EIGHT POUND KEG.

There are a lot of economical powders to use in 44 or 45. Try HERCO or TITEGROUP as well as HP38(231.) It sems like 7.0 of any powder is close to "the sweet spot" for my reloads with cast boolits of 240 to 270 grains.

UNIQUE is always a good place to start.

7 grains of HP38/WW231 works well for me with 250-255 grain cast lead bullets. Red Dot is a good powder, too, though.

last week I had a little red dot left over so I played around with it in .45 with a 300 gr bullet and had a lot of fun and I even had great luck with my fanotite 340gr bullets

I've run a couple of pounds of Red Dot through my 45 Colt revolvers (and carbine) after reading one of Brian Pearce's articles on its suitability for fine shooting with 255 weights. He was right.

HP38 and Red Dot are my two favorite powders for cast bullet loads. I used to favor Herco, which is still in my line-up but no longer my first choice.

MY burning rate guide shows BULLSEYE at the high end; then RED DOT/PROMO; HP38/231; UNIQUE; HERCO; 2400. The slower you go, the more powder.

They're all good. Just match your powder and pressures with the hardness and fit of your boolits.
