im reconverting my old 56 flatgate.ordered a new hammer plunger ,get it installed ,all put back together.pull hammer back everything is good let the hammer down and it wont go past the 2nd notch(loading notch). i can get it to release by pushing down on the bolt.
do i have to take a small amount at a time from the plunger with file ?

? Where'd you find a hammer plunger for an Old Model? Are you certain it's the correct item?

Just a thought.......

Pushing down on the "bolt", cylinder latch in Ruger terms, permits the lockwork to cycle correctly? Have you tried the lockwork with the cylinder in the gun? Any "burrs" on the leg of the latch? Some times a small bevel is needed on the end of the plunger to permit it to slip by the latch...

thanx Flatgate ,not sure now if it is correct plunger, just ASSuMEd they would be the same .i will take 1 out of another OM ss and chec k the difference.
reason for reconverting is the transfer bar keeps slipping off of the stud on the RUGER serviced new trigger and didnt want to mess with the hassle of sending it back in .was never right from the day i got it back.last time i took it to the creek with the grandson the tranfer bar wound up on the sand .
i will do some more comparisons and get back to ya'll

The Old Model plungers are much larger in diameter than are the New Model versions. I would imagine there is a length difference, as well.

I managed to "stuff" a New Model hammer into a Flattop .44 one time. It took a ton of work......... never more..........
