Santa just delivered a M77/357 and it came with scope rings. I think I want a 2-7x or 3-9x scope. I am looking for recommendations of a scope that will not interfere with the bolt action and will also mount with the supplied rings. I don't know if a 40mm scope will fit. I has been difficult finding information about scope to use with this rifle. My budget is $200 or under.

Please help...

I've settled on an older Simmons 1.5x-5x 32mm on mine. Don't need more magnification for my uses, but the scope was short enough that I had to use some Leupold extension rings to mount it and get the proper eye relief.

The black stocked gun in this picture is actually a 77/44 with 4x32 Nikon which I think is perfect for these guns. My other option would be a 2-7x32 Nikon but the 4 power works great. I would also try to either find a shotgun or rimfire scope as there parallax should be set lower like at 50yds which also would fit the 77/44 and 77/357 well. Hope this helps.

I put a Leupold 1-4 Shotgun scope on my 77-44, there is no better fit IMO, and no need for any higher magnification for the pistol caliber cartridges.

Not a bolt-action 77, but a very similar application.... I have Weaver 1-3X on my 96/44. For anything out to 100 yards or a bit more, it's all the scope you need.

That 1X setting is really handy for close, moving shots; if you have a strong dominant eye, you can shoot with both eyes open.

If you want really small and economical to the Burris Timberland fixed 4X is a great choice. Straight tube, probably about 7" OAL and a very small diameter eye piece. Costs about $100.00, bit less if you get refurbished from Natchez. Also, any 2 to7X in the "economy" line of Nikon, Leupold or Burris will do well for anywhere from $125.00 to about $180.00.

Hey, thank you everyone. You all have confirmed my thinking also. I am leaning toward a 2x7. Your photos helped a lot.

Happy New Year

All good recommendations.

Glad to see that nobody recommended a 6-24X50 AO with a mil-dot reticle.... restores my faith in you guys. From my experience, there are a lot of folks with WAY too much scope on their hunting rifles. A varmint or target gun is a different story.... more scope is better.
