I have a blackhawk in 44mag and would like to rebarrel , rechamber to 45 colt can Ruger do that or should I have it rebored.

Welcome to the forum! I doubt there is a conceivable situation in which changing the caliber of this gun will be less expensive than procuring one in .45 Colt. Both NM and OM Blackhawks chambered in .45 Colt are readily available. To my knowledge, Ruger will not change the caliber of your gun under any circumstances other than complete replacement.

Ruger will re barrel but will not change calibers. Way too involved with the frame caliber stamp etc. If you really want a 45 colt blackhawk your best option by far is to trade your 44 in on one or sell your gun outright and shop for a deal on a 45.

You would be money ahead selling your gun and buying a 45.

Why would you want to downgrade??? :P

You would need a new barrel and rechambering of the cylinder, if what you want is a properly spec'd .45Colt chamber. New barrels are ALWAYS preferable to reboring and much quicker too.

Hi James,

Welcome to the forum.

Members above are correct, Ruger has never and will not make caliber changes. Reboring your barrel is expensive; a minimum of ~$150 plus postage both ways, and a long wait, maybe 6 months.

Ruger barrels and cylinders in 45 Colt are not hard to find on ebay, gunbroker and in this forum's classified.

But as some said above the cheapest way is to sell off yours and buy the 45*.

However I suspect you may want to retain some of the SBH features like the extra long Dragoon grip frame (if you have a 7 1/2" or 10" barrel), and low profile wide target hammer. Maybe even the non-fluted cylinder.

There's several options:

If you want to retain the non-fluted cyl, reamimg it to 45 as a member suggested above is the best way to go, and installing a replacement Ruger 45 barrel.

You can also buy a Ruger 45* Colt if you prefer a fluted cyl, then swap grip frames and hammers with your SBH and sell it, acknowledging the changes to the buyer of course. Some prefer that configuration.

Or just sell your SBH and buy a 45*, then buy and add the larger grip frame (~$125 used) and/or wide hammer (about $30). And sell the unused parts.

You could look for a Ruger Bisley 45 Colt with large steel Bisley grip, Bisley target hammer, and non-fluted engraved cyl.

Lots of choices.

*Note: the SBH grip frames are steel, the 45 Blackhawk have alum alloy grip frames of standard size.

Ruger will not do anything "custom" to a Ruger revolver.

But my gunsmith, Keith Warner, can do just about anything you want. (And are willing to pay for.)
