I don't say that I always read EVERY comment on a multi page old thread before I make a comment, but that is the exception to the rule. But its obvious to me that some folks do not seem to read ANY of the replies to the OP before adding their own, redundant comments. Seeing the same comment repeated multiple times, even when some other replies have clearly shown that comment to not be factual, shows that some folks here won't take the effort to read what is already posted because what they post has been already said, sometimes word for word. Even a "+1" or similar comment would be better than the obvious ignoring of all that came before the latest reply. What prompted this thread is the ongoing thread about "What would it take to elect a third party candidate?" in this same part of the Forum. Just read through all the comments and I am fairly sure that you will clearly see what I am claiming here.

Use this, if you care to, so they do be reminded.

I try to scan the replies, but Good Lord! It is endless sometimes. So, I plead guilty to redundancy. {I am so happy that I can remember how to spell that!}

Dunno, Pat, but I think he's talking about people commenting and repeating what others have already posted before they commented. Redundancy I guess, not thread drift.

Along the same lines are people who make comments about a thread without having read the link to an article in the OP that answered their question.

I guess it's the same on any interweeb forum, human nature and all.

Nooo, not the dreaded +1 that we rarely see on this Forum! Usually it's a quote of a post directly above theirs that contains 40 pics that they have to quote it again with a short response like "I agree" or "+1"

I haven’t bothered to read all of the above. Regardless, my comments & opinions, even if repeating what others have written, are as valid as any others. Even those of the OP.

Seems to me that this forum is all about the free exchange of ideas.

you're right Vito, all too often , they post, say something, the same exact thing that may be above,,,,yes, the post may already have been answered, if there was to be a question, that NEEDED an answer, not just a comment.......how many times I have said to myself, "Hey, thats what I just said"......oh well life is too short and its TOO cold outside to worry about it.

as they used to say, too much material added to the band width..... 8)

some sites do not allow ANY comments in their sales area.........

If I concentrate on reading the whole thread before posting my wife says I'm ignoring her and haven't heard a word she said. So who do I need to pay more attention to?

I try to read them all but don't always succeed. It will happen now and then because I was interrupted, nature called or whatever. Feel free to call my attention to it if you like. I have a reasonably thick hide and am aware, dimly, that I might, just might have a fault once in a while.

No offense but part of posting is sharing your thoughts. Just because someone else had similar thoughts, doesn't mean that you can no longer share yours. Posting similar ideas is the least of the issues that is rampant here on the boards
Thinly veiled profanity, personal attacks and the like are much more of a problem than this....

It will be of some help if those who quote a lengthy or picture-heavy post learn they can edit the quoted post to include only a certain, select bit of the quote while deleting all the pictures. If nothing else it helps with the bandwidth situation.

I admit to being a frequent commenter, and I try to follow this procedure whenever possible.

JMHO :)

Nothing wrong with showing that you share the opinion of a previous reply. But, as an example, someone stated that Trump was a “third party candidate”, and a reply correctly pointed out that Trump ran as the candidate of the Republican Party. Then a few replies later someone states “Trump ran as a third party candidate.” And again the same comment a few replies later. Not only clearly incorrect but making it obvious that the thread was not even being read at all.

I generally don’t read comments that go on for paragraph after paragraph.
You must read everything I write then, cause I don't know how to make paragraphs, it all gets put down in one big bunch.

Type some stuff.

Key "Enter" twice.

Type more stuff.

Repeat.

Try it, you'll like it. :)

So, your approach is to look at the total conversation. Could be, some folks just reply to the OP as in a conversation with them. Really, shouldn't be a big deal.

Agreed. Please note that I am replying only to the post immediately above this post. There is no need to read all the other posts to reply to one.

While I always apologize for not reading the thread in the first sentence of the rare instances where I don't read it, Ale-8's complaint is more significant to me.

Often I can not figure out which statement in a lengthy quote the person who quoted it is opining about. However, both misbehaviors are laziness and that is incurable.

Now someone can hoist the train back up onto the track.

Yes, this is my take on it .

I belong to forums that force strict adherence to what the mods think should be discussed. And ones that allow threads to wander as face to face conversations wander.

I much prefer the latter. This place has always been more like a bunch of folks sitting around sipping their favorite brew and listening to the thoughts of others. In the oft convoluted meanderings much good information is passed along.

I mostly try to follow mom’s advice. If you cannot say anything nice don’t say anything at all.

I’d hate to see the conversations stunted by tight control of topics in accordance to a very small number of folks who want things their way because it feels good to them. We are adults as long as we act like adults we should be able freely wander where we will.

No one has said that "wandering" is bad or even unwelcome. Of course total "stealing" of a thread is a bit rude and doesn't really serve anyone's interest as the diverted topic will not be apparent in the title of the thread. What this thread started about was the obvious repetitive comments, not in agreement with earlier comments, but oblivious to earlier comments. But in any event, it is not a big deal. The easy going atmosphere of this forum is admittedly one of its charms and I too would not like to see it rigidly controlled by moderators, removing any and all spontaneity and humor.

That all said, I will admit that when someone adds a reply to a thread that is more like a full chapter in a book it is easy to decide to skip the entire reply rather than read through the verbiage. For me, the same applies to replies where the writer is totally oblivious to grammar and spelling and it is literally difficult to understand what they are trying to express.

If I concentrate on reading the whole thread before posting my wife says I'm ignoring her and haven't heard a word she said. So who do I need to pay more attention to?
Yeah, same here. My wife doesn't like guns but is fine with me owning what ever I like. I give her whatever time she wants. Gee, I love that woman!!!

The problem with and benefit of a forum is that it gives people the opportunity to speak whether new or repetitive. It is up to the reader to scan what has been written and only focus on that which seems not to repetitive as well as that which appears to be informative. The writer need not edits his or her writing to ease the burden. That is up to the reader.
