chuck 100 yd you posted in the original TB post that you load TB .in the .444 marlin I've tried it with my 240 gr cast and cant get a decent group is the 300 gr the secret.

No, my results were from the first try in loading TB in the .444.
The 300 gr cast bullet is a Lyman PB that I cast I can get the mold number if you want. That was several years ago but I kept records in one of my books. The 13 gr. Was a 70% of capacity under the bullet load as recommended by Hodgdon for a starting load. 50 yd groups were in the 1-11/2" area as I recall in my rifle with recoil like a .22 magnum. My rifle has Ballard rifling. If yours is micro groove, shoot fairly soft bullets .002 or so over groove dia.

No experience with the 45/70. But have uses trailboss in a few other cartridges. Only issue I had was in my 475 linebaugh #1. Tried it with some 400 grain xtps very heavy jacketed bullet. Shot terrible. Dug a few bullets out of the sand and a stump. Almost no rifling marks. Any bullet needs to be expanded slightly by the pressure of the powder burning. If not it will not engage the rifling very well. So if the bullet is too hard or not large enough to begin with you might not be getting enough pressure to expand the bullet engage the rifling. As suggested a softer properly sized bullet might help. Or a heavier bullet may work as pressures should be higher.

thanks for the offer chuck but I dont cast my own. thank you mike too. i was loading pretty lite, have to check my info to see what it was, but think I'll try a hotter load and check it out. and yes the recoil on mine were not much either, a joy to shoot compared to the 240gr sp factory loads that i have.
