r.o.a. grip

thinking of putting a longer hand grip frame on my r.o.a i was told a superblack hawk frame will fit. any suggestions?

I considered doing the same myself. An old model SBH Dragoon grip frame will fit but they predate stainless steel SBHs leaving two choices: blued or very expensive brass. New model stainless Dragoon and Hunter grip frames from Brownell's can be drilled to accept the old style trigger return spring and plunger then used on your ROA. Their horns also have to be shortened and they don't match the curve of your ROA's hammer which I wouldn't mind. Any way you do it it's expensive and after spending the money my pre-warning ROA would loose all its collector value and be worth less so I decided to leave my ROA as is. I enjoyed shooting stock ROAs and it didn't occur to me to put a longer grip frame on one until I started reading this forum anyway. To consloe myself I bought a $15 used Herrett BH stock that is very comfortable. It doesn't look old fashioned but it works. It's too bad no one makes a BH stock that extends the length of the plow handle while retaining the basic plow shape.

I don't believe you've done a NM to OM grip frame swap. No "drilling" of the grip frame is needed. What is needed is fabrication of a small "adaptor" which will permit use of the Old Model trigger spring and plunger assembly in the New Model grip frame's trigger spring slot. There just happens to be a pictorial that outlines the simple procedure. Click HERE.

The grip locator tabs (horns as you called them) may or may not need a little fitting. I've installed MANY New Model grip frames on my Old Model shooters and find the procedure no trouble at all.

flatgate; your project looks great, why don't ruger offer this? one more question does the screw holes line up? i see theres a few grip frames on the web, just don't want to get the wrong one

Most any Ruger grip will "fit" most any Ruger, HOWEVER there are slight differences. Some might require some light file work, some fitting might require "major" file work. Some fitting may require welding.

You just have to get the grip frame you want and give it a try......

Usually the biggest disappointment is the "height" of the ears (the left and right portions of the grip frame that "surround" both sides of the hammer and have screws on both sides) vs. the height of the rear of the grip frame.

Grip frame taller than the Cylinder frame? Get out your files and Dremel.
Cylinder frame taller than the grip frame's "ears"? Rats......
