My mother started a tradition quite a while ago making a "Christmas Quilt" for someone in the family. It started out with my sisters and me(5 of us), progressed to the grandchildren(10 of them), great-grandchildren(3 and counting), grandchildren getting married(8 and counting). Oh, she has also been making a quilt for our family reunion for the auction they have to help pay for it. I think she's made 40 if not more quilts over the years. Thought I'd share a couple here. I may steal her photo album so I can scan some more into my computer.

Quilters have always seemed to me to very special people, if not for the creativity involved, then simply for their patience!

My mother made a couple of MUCH simpler quilts than these when we were kids, and, despite the fact she sewed a lot (most of our clothes, etc,) it turned out to be quite a job...

Alan, please tell your Mom her work's beautiful, and may she keep it up for many more years!

beautiful! i have to admit that i am a quilt junkie. i decided to get one for my wife for Christmas a few years ago, and during my shopping/research i pretty much was blown away. man, the nice ones are absolute works of art. i live in western n.c., and a lot of folks make them around here. my granny actually made one for my wife and i when we got married. i really didn't appreciate the creativity and work that went into it at the time, but i definitely do now.

i think my favorite one i have found was all white. it was a "lone star" design, with a big star in the middle, and hundreds of very detailed pieces around the perimeter. the kicker was that it was all very subtly different kinds of cloth, all being shades of white. from a distance, it just looked like a white quilt, but from closer, it was an absolute work of art. i hate to admit it, but i couldn't afford it, and the next time i went by there, it was long gone. it was nearly 1000.00.

My mom quilts She has probably been doing it for 10 or 12 years. We must have six or seven or her quilts, besides the several smaller quilts she has given to my daughter, grandma's quilts ya know.

I actually have one from my grandma. Not sure how old it is, probably at least 75 years. They last forever, one reason they cost so much.

The last quilt my mom made she told me there is around 100 dollars in material, my dad corrected her and said probably 250 or 300. I guess the materials are pretty expensive, another reason they cost so much.

The quilts pictured are nice. I like quilts for sleeping. They are nice and heavy.

Eight full sized quilts made by my late bride in our house. Several smaller ones. Three on the beds, two queen size and one twin. The others are folded ready for use. The wedding ring one has six rings across and is on the downstairs guest room bed, it is a queen size. No sewing machine work; all by hand.

The one on my bed has a flannel underside; nice and heavy and warm.

Just hope when the time time our daughter treats them right.

My grandmother is 90 and stopped quilting about 5 yaers ago. She was an amazing quilter as well. I'm envious of the patience and artistry that goes into each one. Very nice and thanks for posting.

I had a girlfriend when I was in my early 20's who lived and breathed quilting. She was always talking with quilters many times over her elder. I was asked my opinion on patterns many many times back then.

Thanks for bringing the topic up. I had forgotten about that time in my life. Most of the quilts I see now are machine made. Nowhere near the detail of handmade.
