Question on Single Six .22's

I'm looking for a shooter with the .22mag my priority. Are the guns advertised as only LR or only mag still interchangeable with the other cylinder? If so, in your experience is it just best to buy the convertible in the first place or get a darn good deal on one or the other and buy the other cylinder at another time as far as price goes?

Are you looking for an Old Model or a New Model?

Not ALL cylinders interchange. There are some slight variances in O.A.L. that may end up causing some trouble. "Long" cylinders are easy to shorten whereas "short" cylinders can open up a can of worms. One must also consider what the barrel to cylinder gap will be. Large gaps can and will cause "lead spitting" and too tight of a gap can cause "binding" of the cylinder, esp. after it's been fired several times. Shortening the cylinder's body to permit it to "fit" the cylinder frame requires some precision equipment.

To answer your question..... either plan can be the answer. It all depends...... cost, condition, etc.

Overall, it generally costs more to buy a single cylinder gun and add the other cylinder later. Add that to the various troubles outlined by Carl above re: cylinder fit and there is no doubt that buying a revolver with both, matched, factory-fitted cylinders is the best way to go.

But since you mentioned primary interest in the .22 Magnum, you could search for a .22 mag only revolver. I found a stainless single-six where the original owner had misplaced the .22 lr cylinder and I got it at a great price because of that. Since the RSS barrels are overbored to accomodate the .22 magnum bullet diameter, to the detriment of .22lr accuracy, I just use this revolver for .22 mag shooting and use my KMK512 auto pistol for plinking with the .22 lr.

Above hits the nail on the head. I researched and I kept seeing the same comment about the LR accuracy suffering. I'm planning on trying these old eyes out on some groundhogs next year and thought it might be fun to see how good (Or bad :lol: ) I could do with a revolver. No scope, just over iron sights.

So......I think I'm going to look for a .22mag and make sure I follow Carls' advice and make sure I can always add a LR later which is not that important to me right now.

For that type of shooting, I'd recommend the 6.5-inch barrel, or a 9-inch if you can find one.
