my friend has several boxes of the 209 primers made by Alcan. are these able to be used in muzzleloading rifles that use the 209 primer?

Yep, they are the same size as any other 209 primer.

Another issue would be what type of powder do you plan to use? If you switch over to the newer Blackhorn 209 you really need a hot primer for reliable ignition, CCIM, & a few others. For most of the other propellants you would be fine.
