I'm trying to recall a movie I saw a few years back, maybe mid-'Fifties or so.

The movie was a war movie, set in World War II. The movie was made around 1950, and was in color as I recall. The only thing I remember was that there was a scene in which the men were in training, and they were doing close order drill. They were in platoon formation and as cadence they were doing a version of "The Crawdad Song."

Anybody know anything about this show and any details?

I think the movie was "Battle Cry!"

IMDB is great for searching stuff. Check out the trailer about 3/4 of the way through - about 3:15

BTW - I had no clue. Looked up Battle Cry, looked at the trailer and then looked up the Crawdad Song.

"I'm just like the prairie flower, Honey, Honey,
I'm just like the prairie flower, Babe, Oh babe
I'm just like the prairie flower,
Growin' wilder by the hour, Honey, Oh Baby of mine,

Go to your left, your right your left!"

"I've got a gal in every port, Honey, Honey
I've got a gal in every port, Babe,
I've got a gal in every port,
suin' me for non support."

Man! Did that take me back a few years! And then there was Jody..........

I have Battle Cry in my movie collection. As a matter of fact I watched again about three nights ago. I wish I still had a copy of the book. It was good.

I wonder if Jody calls are still permitted in today's "more sensitive" military?

Do Soldiers even march anymore? With plastic helmets and .22 rifles the norm, why impose them?

Never heard of the movie or book. I think the anti-war 70's killed interest in most WWII movies by broadcasters.
Turner Classic Movies plays a few. Mostly on Memorial and Veterans Day.
In the 80s we got this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rjr2W0wQvs0

Basic training at Lackland AFB in Sep-Nov '61. After we learned how to march, one day our TI showed us how to do "Monkey Drill". Commands were like while marching..."Double to the Rear with a Slight Hesitation, to the Rear, March". My fave was "Flight STOP!" The two lines of troops on the outside stopped then side-stepped two paces out then two paces back in, while the two inner lines made four left or right turns, all the while yelling out, "Cuck-Koo, Cuck-Koo"

By the time I got to Lackland things were showing the first signs of change. “Mass Punishment” was supposedly no longer allowed. Yet the first day of PT when we were told we would run a mile, being an inveterate smart a$$ I said “is that all”. So we all got to do two.

I learned two things that day. First, keep your mouth shut. And second, the TI had no sense of humor.

I did slip on the first once more. When ask who a family friend and also a full bird was, I responded nobody. I was quickly and at great length taught the error of my ways.

Thank heavens they didn’t ask about his daughter. I would probably have been executed.

"The Crawdad Song" reminded me of basic training while double-timing:
I wanna go to Vietnam
I wanna kill some Viet Cong
Air Born...Ranger
Here we go...all the way
And that's where I ended up 5 Months later.

That must have been Tech Sgt. Robert. No sense of humor at all. He and I crossed paths a couple of times. Not fun every time.
