Question for Glock experts...

Last week while on vacation I was reading a mystery novel. This was a young woman private investigator in Paris... and on several occasions she was hunkered down hiding from the bad guy and would flip the safety off of her Glock pistol......

is there such a thing?

Well Glocks don't come with a manual safety but I remember reading where you can add one.

Well, we just found another one! If I had a dime for every stupid thing about guns put into print, I wouldn't need my pension check.

Yes, they make a Manual Safety Kit you can install on a Glock.

Yep, Brownells carries these safety kits and the jig to drill the hole(s).

Except for the above mentioned add-on safety, the only safety is that you have to have your finger on the trigger for it to go off. Of course, if you think about it, that the safety that is installed between your ears and applies to any firearm there is. Even with the add-on safety, the trigger is the final "safety".

Thanks folks, I wasn't sure and was thinking maybe the Glocks in Europe were made different than those sold here.
One of my favorite writers was Robert Parker and his Spencer series until I was reading one where a body had been found in a park shot and they found the 'ejected' 38 round's cartridge in the grass. Not a 38 super but a standard 38 police special.

It was a single shot and so ejecting that one round from a revolver did not seem practical.

back to the original mistake... the author is Cara Black and the Title of the book was "Murder in the Marais" which was her fist book in this series and I really enjoyed it.. the one mistake did not throw me... well near the end she shoots one of the bad guys three times in the groin and he dies instantly and we'll let that one pass too.

I think I would die instantly if shot there too. Not from vital damage but from the realization that I would never be able to...well, you know...

Well you asked so, lets get technical. The US Glocks have 3 safeties unknown about any others sold world wide. 1 trigger safety 2 firing pin safety 3 drop safety. None are flip off type as in a normal safety that we call a safety, that must be flipped or pushed or pulled to allow the gun the fire. Depressing the trigger disengages the trigger safety, the other 2 also disengage with the trigger pull.
#2 safety was remade years ago because a hard strike to the gun would cause it to fire after the strike. We had several AD, while training a baton strike did it and a vehicle crash caused a gun to fire. Both with gun in holster. The fix was easy and done around 1990.

You guys are all right about books, TV and movies. I read books weekly and many authors screw up. I think they just do not know. They know Glock is a major gun maker and use the name but, they never shoot or own guns and add details that do not make sense. 2 come to mind, a writer mentioned a guy had a S&W small frame stubby 5 shot in .22 jet caliber. You need to know what that is, it is a real caliber but, I do am about 100% sure it was ever a j frame stubby, it was a k frame 6 shot long barrel. The jet is a .357 cartridge necked down. Or how about the movie maybe a James Bond where a guy puts together a AR-7 rifle, .22lr and snipes a guy blocks away like it was a center fire caliber.
I read about half of the books if a Glock is used they switch the safety off before taking a shot. These are books written in the US.

Ignorance. Writers are people with a lot of imagination. Not necessarily a lot of knowledge. Much of what I read or see on T.V. is unrealistic & unbelievable. I tend to ignore T.V. except for reruns. I don't read much fiction anymore though I used to read a lot when I was younger.

Hi,

Just last night I was watching a TV show, set in contemporary times, where a guy had been murdered, and a faked suicide was staged to cover it. Medical examiner found "cordite residue" on the deceased's hand... when's the last time anyone here handled any cordite? For myself, it was probably 20 years ago, with ammo nearly a half century old at the time! And it was rifle ammo, not something we'd feed thru a Beretta 92 series. It's entertainment, folks, thassall!

And Ale may just have a really good point, too!
