I know the talk about the 9 penetration views on 115, 124, and 147. Do the 147gr bullet recoil more than the 115 124gr?

I was thinking of going with Federal HST 147gr.

Recoil feel is personal.

I note that the 124g +P and +P+ versions offer the greatest on-target effectiveness.
Proper loads mirror lower-end 357 Magnum choices, and match the 357 SIG.

A 147g, even in +P loadings, emulates a well-loaded 38 Special.

If all are pushed to simular velocities, yes it does. Simple physics. The smaller/lighter the gun, the more it'll be noticed. Like WESHOOT2 said though, recoil feel is personal. You might or might not find the difference meaningfull.

I'd say to try a few rounds and see what ya think.

I guess recoil IS personal because I shoot my ruger sp101 357 just fine but others say it too much. But see I handle revolvers better than semi's. Just wondering about the 9mm because I read all these debates about them.

I got a LC9 a couple of days ago and checking out ammo. If Federal HST 147 +P recoils like a hot 38 special then that isn't too bad.

Totally agree with WESHOOT2 re: recoil feel is personal.

I can't tell the difference between 115 gr. standard vs. 124 gr. standard or 115 gr +P vs. 124 +P but the 147 gr. recoil impulse feels different *to me*. At the risk of mis-using words to describe it, it has less of a snap and more of a push.

I wouldn't say it's more or less recoil, just different.

I run Federal HST 124gr. standard or +P, depending on what I can find when it comes time to rotate my SD ammo stock. Gun is a SR9. I would imagine recoil will be considerably more in the smaller and lighter LC9.

EDIT: Clarify 115 vs. 124...

I can't tell the difference between 115 or 124 in standard or +P but the 147 standard pressure recoil impulse feels different *to me*. At the risk of mis-using words to describe it, it has less of a snap and more of a push.

I gonna try the HST 147gr. Heck... I haven't had a chance to shoot the LC9 because of the weather. Ordering the HST's this week. Gotta fax my drivers license in first.

Good luck and have fun.

No better way than to see for yourself. I'm guessing it'll be "no big thang" between 124 and 147 HST.

Let us know how it goes!

Note: I edited my first post. Was a little unclear re: standard and +P 115 v. 124.

I love the terminal ballistic quandries too. That being said.. The first rule of gun fighting is to have a gun ! Next I'll say its best to have the will and the skill. Better at this point to invest in courses and classes, not more hardware. Bottom line here, shoot the threat to the ground, one round, three or five. Kick their weapon free, assess 360 degrees for further threats, check yourself for wounds, do a tactical reload, then consider a 911 call. 'Course you can keep buying toys and going to a "range". steve b

In pistols(semi-autos) a pressure value has to be met for reliable function. So, nearly the same recoil ,measured in Ft LBS.. What will differ is the speed of recoil, or what I think of as the violence of recoil. With my hands/age, etc.. I find light fast loadings more disruptive of a good follow-up shot. Your mileage may vary, and with your life on the line, you will not notice much diff., in loadings. Move on to more training. steve b

As a new owner for a month or two, I have felt more recoil in 124 grain +p than with standard 115 grain. There is more oomph when the bullet comes out of the muzzle. Any new user who test our different grains will notice the recoil.

That 147 HST should be a fine round for SD. If you want a lighter round that doesn't give up penetration, the Cor Bon DPX loadings should do you right. A bit expensive, but these all copper rounds seem to penetrate deeper than their bullet weight might lead you to believe.

Yes I agree recoil is a personal thing, some shooters are more sensitive to it than others.

Over the years I have worked on to not even think about it. Made me a better shooter. When I go shooting recoil is the furthest thing from my mind I don't even think about it it just happens. ps
