Hi folks,

My mother Ellen is in need of prayers. She is 86 years old, still lives alone, and took a bad fall yesterday on her front porch.
Her neighbors saw her and came to her aid, and the paramedics took her to the ER in Portland at OHSU.

She fell forward onto her concrete porch while going up the stairs, and broke her jaw on both sides, and put a nasty gash on her chin requiring multiple stitches. She bit her tongue badly in the process too. She also dislocated her shoulder and broke or cracked at least 3 ribs. They managed to put her shoulder back in place without surgery, but can't do much about the jaw until the swelling goes down, and the plastic surgeon is unsure if she will require surgery to fix it or not. Regardless, she will be wearing a sling on her "good" arm for a few weeks (the other arm was injured a few months ago, and is largely useless) and will be on a liquid diet for 6 weeks.

Fortunately my two brothers still live in Portland and are there for support. It's going to be difficult for them to see to her needs while still working their jobs and maintaining their own families. Mom is going to need a lot of help.

Prayers for your mom, and for the family. My dad lived in his own home until he was 90, and we worried about him a lot. Finally convinced him to move to independent living. Perhaps you should consider something along those lines. It is comforting for family to know they are not alone. JMHO, of course.

Sending healing prayers to your mother and please guide the hands of the doctors in care of her .

Thank you all for your prayers. The hospital is keeping her for a few more days for observation, and we are looking for a rehab residential arrangement for when she is released.

We want her to be able to still live in her home for as long as she is capable of doing so safely.
That is now in question, unless we can arrange for adequate home health care support and other services.
If she would just USE her stupid walker it would be a huge step. She is terribly vain, and doesn't look her age, so she loves it when people tell her she "only" looks like 74 or something. So, she won't use her walker and she won't wear her hearing aides, both of which she needs badly. I hope this fall is a big wake up call for her.👩‍🦽

I prayed for her, may God's healing hand be on her. I empathize as my 79 year old mom lives by herself also.

As a person whom works in nursing home, if all it is broken jaw and few scrapes, ( not saying its not good) a little unsteadyness, bring her home to re-coop she will re-coop faster and bring in HHA the few hours that a family member cannot be there.
I'm not saying Nursing homes are bad or all bad just know by experience some elderly seem to heal faster when their more comfortable at home.
