Powder suggestions for 270Win/30-06 loads

I've been reloading for my revolvers (45 Colt and 357Mag) and my Marlin 45/70 for about 10 years now. I've been preparing to start into reloading for my 270 Winchester and 30-06 rifles next, using bullets in the 130grn - 180grn range. I've had pretty good experience with Hodgdon and IMR powders, and am trying to decide whether to start with 4350 or 4831 for my first loads. I'm open to input on which of these powders other people have had good results with in these applications. They both seem like they cover similar ground as far as velocity goes, so I'm looking for input based on your experiences/recommendations.

IMR 4350 would be a good compromise while the 4831 would be slightly better in the 270. I've loaded some very good ammo for the 7mmRem mag using 4350 but it just won't quite reach the velocities of 4831.

For the 270 using 130 grain bullets H4831 is the classic powder, and with good reason, it works. I have loaded this combination in six different rifles over the past 30 years with excellent results in each one. Work up to to 60.0 grains and you will likely get 3100 fps or better and 1" groups or better with no excess pressure signs. It doesn't get much better than that!

30-06 use RL 22 or one of the other RLs. Check Alliants site for recommendations and how much powder.

IMR 4831, or R19 would be great powders in both 30-06 and 270 Win.

Hi,

I've had good luck in the '06 using 150 gr jacketed bullets over Reloder 15 and Win 760. 180 gr cast have worked well over Win 760 and IMR 4831 (reduced loads per Lee's "Modern Reloading" formula.) My brother in law likes 180 jacketed over IMR 4064. Neither of us loads the .270 so can't offer anything there.
