Polishing A Chamber -- How To?

Do you all think I could remove material from the chamber that is scratching cartridges by using a bore mop and some simichrome polish on a cleaning rod rotated by a drill? I can't think that I would change dimensions materially with simichrome.

I have done it on a shotgun before. I traded for an old savage version of the auto 5 and the shells would stick in the chamber. I wrapped fine steel wool around an old bore brush and applied semicrome polish used a drill just as you described. Worked for me. I'm sure that you could over do it to the point of removing too much metal but it would take some work i.e. the amount of metal removed is not instantaneous where if you hold on a little too long it would go from ok to disaster in a few seconds. I wouldn't use valve lapping compound or something like that as it is much more abrasive. Also be sure and clean out your lug recesses and raceways as well as the chamber and barrel afterwards if it is a bolt rifle. Good luck

how I would polish a bore depends a lot on case and gun type.
I have used a fired case, remove the primer and mount it on the end of a wood dowel. I used various grit of lapping compound. for ACP cases, I placed a flat washer between fired case and dowel to prevent doing any damage to the head space lip.

I can'r recomend this, but something I did for a salvaged mini14 with a chamber pitted so bad the fired case had to be hammered out, was to clean and rough up chamber, then fire a round coated in epoxy. The rifle has worked fine for several hundred rounds now

4MUL8R, I like to use a "split" end dowel rod with #0000 steel wool first and then polish out with either simichrome or rouge polishing media on an appropriate size rifle or pistol "mop"!...............Dick :wink:
