Asked over at rimfire central a couple of days ago. No replies. When pillar bedding a stock should the action screws be as close to the I.D. of the pillars as possible? Mine have some wiggle room. Thanks for your thoughts on this.
Depends on how well your bedding job is. I am assuming your bedding the action in addition to adding the pillars. As long as the action is bedded well there should be no way it can move. The action screws are going to tighten against the outer edge of the pillars so any internal slop should not be an issue.
Now if you are just doing pillars and no other bedding that slop could be a problem. The only thing pillars would do in that case would ensure consistent tightening of the screws. Between the probable slop in action and stock fit plus the screw slop you would have a hard time having the action in the same spot all the time.
If you were not planning on bedding other than the pillars it is not too much more work. Typically if your doing pillars all that is needed is a skim coat of bedding in the stock. Most times you can get away with not even relieving the stock for the bedding. I would go in two steps. Install the pillars then do the action.
Mike, thanks for the info. I am planning on bedding the action also. The barrel and action are currently at C.P.C. Randy is performing his magic. Can`t wait to get everything back together. Thanks again for your reply.
