I was scouting with Elmer and caught a little movement way up in the crook of a tree across the little draw about 60yds, I found a nice tree to lean back against and began ruining her day.... This was one of the biggest coons (Elmer goes 76lbs) I have ever seen and if the coat is any indication of winter we are in for it! It would have been a beautiful hide if someone hadn't put three 44 caliber holes in her (Yes I shot 6 times). She would not come out of that tree and hung on for some time but the last one persuaded her to let go. The 240gr SWC (that Lynn Halstead casts) are very accurate with 7.5grs of Unique, and is a load one or two of you may recognize, no secrets here...When she'd hit the deck you'd think a young deer had dropped out of that Chestnut tree it was such a thud...Elmer found her quickly and I got a couple of pics with my Iphone. While it isn't as nice as some of Sixshots Badgers it was still a good day when you can get out a sixgun and pop a varmint or two. I haved saved the farms garbage cans for yet another night.

Off topic somewhat, but about a winter forecast though. I have a long haired cat whose coat is the thickest I have seen in her short 12 years. Just the other day when I was combing her I was wondering if that was a warning about the coming winter.

I deal with a lot of coons, but most of mine get to meet me via a cage trap. Just in the past week, I've taken 3 out of one house. One was very docile, while the other two could have given a badger a heck of a fight. Looks like you have good badger medicine there!

Wow! Nice coon COR! If you want one of your bullets back, I'll pluck it from my gut with a pair of tweezers. It's only a flesh wound, can't say the same for the coon

Was that Punxsutawney Phil the legendary Pennsylvania weather forecaster you just drilled??  :D :D

We took care of Phil too...Elmer caught him in the woods and the downhill run let him get a hold of his tail as he disappeared in the hole...then he just flipped him up into his mouth and started prancing around with him like he had done something special...

He dropped him and I drilled the hole digging monster with same load as his coon buddy. It's my equal opportunity policy regarding varmints...Sorry the pic quality is bad, I only had my phone, I really need to start taking my camera.

great pics.i had a lab when i used to live out your way 30 some odd years ago.He used to reak havoc on the local chuck population.LOL

Curt, well done!! That big ole coon reminds me of some of the protien feeder raiders we got down here! Even Tyrone would think twice before getting into the Octagon with Coonasaurus Rex!!

2 dogs, it's funny you say that. I picked up a coon yesterday that was very large. It filled the cage, and was heavy enough to where I was concerned about carrying the cage to the truck out away from my body far enough to where it couldn't reach me. Luckily, it was docile enough to where it didn't try anything. Been living high on the feeders at this house. I'm gonna weigh it today, as I put it in the frig after it's trip to the chamber. (I rarely weigh any as I see too many. BUt the biggest ones,,, well they do get extra attention. I even got a 17 lb skunk about a month ago.)

Now Tyrone, you know dang well I love picking at ya..... But I never brought up skunks!

contender do you put the greasers up this time of the year?

Don't worry 2 dogs, I know ya didn't bring up any skunks. I did, and it's because I was shocked at the size of that one. Kinda relating to the size of coons & badgers. Most skunks I get are around the 5-10 lb range. So, just for you, (if we ever get the chance for a face to face,) I'll save some real sweet skunk juice! :D :D And you can pick away anytime my friend!

foxtrapper, I do put up some of my furs this time of year. In fact, I have 2 very big coons, a skunk, an otter all in the fridge awaiting skinning & fleshing. I have a few things drying as well. In the freezer is a beaver, a mink, along with a few skins that need fleshing. My old fleshing board got "bottowed" a while back, and I had to make a new one recently.

The deer are big locally too this year...Many of the farmers had to let corn stand almost a month longer due to rain and the deer and bear got real fat and happy. I saw a coyote on Saturday morning that I mistaked for a loose dog that I didn't shoot figuring he had a collar. I guess he's eating the big coons that ate the corn after I leave it on the "buffet log" on the hill. It's amazing how quickly a 50lb coon will disappear (that's a weight estimate after 3 beers).

Skunks get a free pass with me and Elmer, the last one I shot required me to go out at around 10pm, dig a hole and bury that sucker. He stunk up the whole damn hollow so bad that one of the neighbors complained they could "taste it with their dinner". My eyes were watering and I burnt the clothes I had on even though I never touched him directly. I still can smell it if I go near his gravesite and its been months. I leave those smelly bastards to professionals like "contender" who get paid for that kinda crap.
