When I was a kid “ Sam Campbell”, a naturalist wrote a bunch of easy reading books about wildlife around his house in Minnesota I think.

I liked all the Patrick McManus books.
Perhaps he might like Gene Hill or Ed Zern.
Perhaps he might like Gene Hill or Ed Zern.
These aren't "outdoor" writers, but their comedic style is in the McManus ballpark.
Jean Shepard: Fabulous writer whose work was the basis for the famous Christmas Story movie. All his stuff was great.
Dave Barry: Still active humor writer.
H. Allen Smith: He was a journalist in the '30s or '40s, active into the '50s and '60s. His stuff holds up amazingly well to this day, and he's hilarious.
You might have to go to the public library or a good used book store to find them.

Had all of them including the 'diversions'. My son was not impressed by the long johns in the BB gun box. But it was fun to watch him unwrap it. He did get the gun afterwards and we have always been fans of Pat. I was fortunate to meet him and get signed copies on several occasions.

Tom Black beat me to it. Corey Ford is who Patrick McManus copied to a "T".
I'd say if he liked Patrick McManus he'll love Corey Ford. I know my nephew did!
Two books I can recommend are The Best of Corey Ford and The Corey Ford Sporting Treasury.
Other books that are different but humorous are: Carmichael's Just Jim by Jim Carmichael and That Reminds me Of The One... by Willow Creek Press written by about 20 different authors.

Skeeter Skelton's "Me and Joe" stories are pure gold. A young reader would love them.
