Beloved humor, outdoors writer Patrick McManus dies at age 84

Patrick McManus, the New York Times best-selling humorist and outdoor writer from the Spokane area, died on Wednesday. He was 84.

His family confirmed his death to KHQ on Thursday evening.

McManus, who was raised in Sandpoint, was a longtime humor columnist for magazines such as Outdoor Life and Field & Stream. He became an associate editor at Field & Stream, and editor-at-large for Outdoor Life, and he wrote for both publications for more than 40 years. His columns featured a cast of characters loosely based on the folks he knew from his youth in Sandpoint, guys like Rancid Crabtree and Crazy Eddie Muldoon, and a dog named Strange.

May Rancid, Crazy Eddie, Retch and several other of my childhood "idols" from the back pages of the outdoor magazines in Mr. McManus' entourage raise a glass to a great writer, and one of those guys you may never meet, but still consider a friend. RIP, Sir!

Lord, I hate to read this. I loved his stories, think I have everyone of his books and somewhere around here a personal letter from him. There will never be another Rancid Crabtree, he was my hero. Out of all his tales, my favorite story was "The Swamp." I can't tell you how many times I've read it an I still blow an O ring every time I do. Tonight, after going to bed, I think I will read it again and say good by to Pat.

Talent like that is a very rare thing. He could paint a picture with words like few others. The world was a better place having been graced by his presence. R.I.P.

"The Skunk Ladder" has to be my favorite, although I enjoyed everything he wrote.

When I read the story of the Kid bringing the deer down the hill on his bike it brought tears to my eyes.
My Grandson also read his books.
Yep Now I'm going to go test drive a new pair of Teners just for him

I wish he would have lived for ever like his books.

McManus was writing mystery books the last few years. Wife really enjoyed them as well.

I met him several years ago at a bow hunters event. He was under the weather and I felt bad for him, but he was still a good sport and signed peoples books and such.

20+ years ago, there was a local sporting goods dealer that had a fishing show on TV. I don't know if it remained a regional show, or if it was shown elsewhere. Anyway...Here's an episode where Patrick McManus was on the show.

His story about the deer riding the bicycle was a classic...I loved his Sheriff Bo Tully series...good clean fun. RIP sir.

I see that I'm not the only guy who grew up reading,, enjoying & laughing at what Pat wrote. Add in that I too have all his humor books,,, and have often felt like I was one of the background characters because I knew folks just like the ones he often described.
He has blessed the world with his humor,, and that will withstand the tests of time.
May he rest in peace knowing he made a lot of folks smile,,, quite often too!

When I was a kid, things were pretty tight around our place. One day we went to a rummage sale and this older fellow had a giant box of Outdoor Life. I think he wanted a dollar for the whole box. Dad bought me that box and I spent the next couple years reading and re-reading every issue. Especially the Last Laugh by Patrick. I'm sure there are columns he wrote that I read 20 or 30 times.
