My favorite pawn shop had a Black Friday sale, 25% off everything in the shop. I have had a hankering for a long-slide .45, and they had one in the display case. I took a good look it. It was an Auto-Ordinance, with extended safety and slide release and oversized mag release. It felt good in the hand, but didn't have an ambi safety (I'm a southpaw), was well-used, with a replacement muzzle bushing. Even on sale, I just couldn't justify buying an iffy pistol, especially as I have a perfectly good P-90 with lots of spare mags.

Anyone remember the name of the comic-book crimefighter who carried a brace of .45's?

In the 1994 movie starring Alec Baldwin ". . . he is armed with a pair of Browning .45-caliber semi-automatic pistols that for the film have longer barrels, are nickel-plated, and have ivory handles."

On the cover of a 1939 magazine he is shown firing a pair of handguns that appear tp be 1911-ish.

Sounds like the OP made the right choice. The older AutoOrdnance 1911s have a spotty reputation for reliability, and it seems that **everybody** thinks that they know how to "enhance" them.
