Reading another post about drug abuse got me wondering . Does any pain medication stop pain or does it just make you so loopy that you don’t care if you back or whatever hurts . I’ve never needed any pain reliever other than aspirin or Tylenol

Depends! Some make you loopy (dissociative anesthetics for instance like Telazol-What we used on bears). Opiates do both (at least to me)=I refuse them before any surgery and afterwards. Percodan, if I remember right, makes you loopy. Being loopy and knowing there's pain likely reduces the chance of further injury. Just had a molar extracted; they wanted to give me oxycodone and I refused. Had me alternate Advil & Tylenol (BIG doses), together with my daily aspirin. I knew when I needed my next dose but was fine otherwise.

Had my hip replaced (at my request....bone on bone). After the operation they gave me a pill that caused hallucinations and nausea...told them no more. They had also hooked up a morphine dispensing machine that allowed you to self dose if the pain was bad. I decided I did not want to become addicted to any drug (other than a good Scotch) so I never used it. When I checked out of the hospital they were suprised it was un touched. I aske if I could take it home since I was sure I had paid for it...no smiles or laughs.
I guess some folks have a low threshold for pain and others not.

Pain medication used properly and as prescribed helps cut the pain to a bearable level. You can build up a tolerance to it so it might not be as effective after long term use. People get into trouble with it when they think if 1 makes it feel better and 2 give me a buzz then 3 should really be great. Last night my sciatic nerve was screaming like Hillary the day after the 2016 election so I took an extra dose and laid with my hip stretched over a glass pop bottle to relieve the pressure and pain. I always have some left at the end of the prescription and will consent to a drug test or pill count any time the doctor wants to do it. I have been tested once since I have been on them and everything was good so my doctor has no problem with me having a prescription. I am fortunate that he gives me something for pain so I can live a productive life and be an asset to the world instead of a liability.

I have no knowledge of it so just curious if people take that stuff and get to feeling good and think they are good to go about daily business
I think they warn don’t operate machinery after taking

Pain medicine doesn't necessarily make the pain go away , it just make time go by.

Throughout the week, I take Advil Duel-Action 2-6 per tablets per day. I've seen far too many people ruin...Or, end their lives on the hard-core prescription pain meds.

I had a TKR (Total Knee Replacement) last May, and they hooked me up to a 'medicine ball' pump that administered a pain reliever (I don't actually know what the med was) periodically. It delivered the med through a catheter stuck in my abdomen. Anyhow, when they had to replace that one (it was empty), the new one had a button that I could push to administer the med when it was needed - like after Physical Therapy. Once the button was pushed, it was inoperative for 30 minutes, IIRC. I didn't use it often before I was discharged, but the med most assuredly helped with the pain. They sent me home with 15 Oxycodone tablets, and told me to call if I thought that I needed more. I didn't. So for me, yes, the various meds alleviated the pain.

Back in 2009 I had a ruptured quadriceps tendon reattached, and what was supposed to be outpatient surgery turned into a night in the hospital. They started treating the pain (the worst that I have ever experienced) with Tylenol. When that had zero effect, they gave me Oxycodone. When that didn't help, they gave me Morphine. The Morphine made me feel nauseous, but otherwise did very little. This went on from around 1:00 PM until around 1:00 AM. Finally, the pain subsided and I was able to get some sleep. I regarded this experience as a demonstration of poor pain management by the doctor(s).

The pain has to be extremely bad for me to take pain pills. Being in severe pain will keep you tensed up and will keep you from sleeping. Your body won’t heal as well like that.

I’ve found ibuprofen works for headaches and muscle pain and ramp it up to naproxen for more serious muscle or joint pain as it lasts longer. The few times I’ve taken oxy I was glad to have had it and was also glad it was only for a short time.

I remember before my back surgery I was eating 8-12 oxy hydro anything I could get my hands on a day. I don't recall ever even getting a buzz. I could take 2 oxy with a 6pack of beer and not even be buzzed. At best it took the edge off enough to not eat a bullet that day.

Yep, been there done that. Fortunately, since a growing number of folks risk at most an industrial paper cut they will never understand.

Ibuprofen/motrin is an anti inflammatory. So it is doing more than just killing the pain. I was refusing to take it and my Dr explained it was helping me heal not just killing pain.

I had a dr recommend that I take Advil and Tylenol together since they go "to different receptors". She was right and for years, I simply take what I call a "duplex dose" (one of each; seldom two of each). It's been working for me for many years now.
When I was in the Navy hospital in Portsmouth (for kidney stones), they gave me IV demerol (sp.?) and OMG, I slept for days until I passed the stone. I was too low a rank to be considered for surgery .

I remember before my back surgery I was eating 8-12 oxy hydro anything I could get my hands on a day. I don't recall ever even getting a buzz. I could take 2 oxy with a 6pack of beer and not even be buzzed. At best it took the edge off enough to not eat a bullet that day.

Hvymax you said it just like it is. A friend of mine slipped on a 3rd floor roof and landed on his back across the bed of a truck. He was on some pretty serious pain medication and he got popped on a drug test. The doctor cut him off totally and the guy started using anything he could get to cut the pain. He hurt so much that he finally resorted to the Remington 870 cure...

Unfortunately, you build up an immunity to any medication after time, and it takes an increasing dose to have any effect.

Tylenol is good for pain relief while ibuprofen is good for pain AND inflammation. I rarely use either but a couple weeks ago the ibuprofen was a blessing.

It takes 800 of Motrin and cyclobenzeprine every morning to loosen me up. To actually function beyond basic 800 of Motrin and 1,000 of Tylenol and a 5 or 10 when I'm done along with TENS and inversion after a hot shower.

As far as Ibuprofen etc. It works well for inflammation and with Ice which is a natural anti inflammatory agent, Down side is Ibuprofen does a job on your stomach.

After my hip replacement, I took a minimal amount of pain meds. The side effects of the meds sounded worse than the pain.

I had to take a percoset in the hospital after my heart surgery.
After they took the drain tubes out from behind my lungs it was instant relief and no more drugs were needed.

God gave me an allergy to several types of "the good stuff" so I have no danger of addiction. When I had a surgery I told them about my opioid allergy and also that I would prefer a non-narcotic for addictive reasons.

I have never been in a casino either. I have enough problems I don't need to add more.

I take OTC pain meds 1-2 per year.

In 2017 I had a biopsy of my left lung to check out a nodule for cancer (it was)... The anesthesiologist had a vial of fentanyl and I was joking with him about it and asked if it was the good stuff or he got it on the street. They went in between my ribs to remove the cancerous piece and that was some interesting pain... I had a morphine pump and only clicked it a couple of times when it hurt a little more than I could stand. I see both sides of the pain medication debate and there is no winner. You do build up a tolerance to it so it helps less at times but it does add quality to the lives of some people. Others get caught in a vicious circle of addiction and don't care about anything except trying to get what they want.

Pain killers don't stop pain in the sense that the wound or repair to tissue is suddenly made better. They mask and stop the sensation
of pain from awareness. It's a lot more complicated than my simplified explanation.
Pain meds are good and should be used as prescribed by competent
professionals. There are some meds like Pregabalin that are very effective but the mechanism of action is not fully understood.
Most pain meds have abuse potential, however when prescribed by medical professional they are helpful.

People’s perception is their reality until someone else does the evaluation. You might not have felt buzzed, but I would bet that your reflexes were significantly altered.

I’m basically unable to function without hydrocodone And Motrin. Deteriorating discs and arthritis make it difficult to to walk or do any physical activity without chemical assistance. The doc would like to operate on my back but I’ve only heard of a few that were successful. YMMV

Lots of opinions, based on some facts. As an RN x53 years, I have given thousands of Mg of it over the years. People with lung and cardiac pain 2-4 mg/hr gives amazing relief, unless allergic or can’t tolerate due to nausea. Many other opiates that can be given. When used for pain opiates are great, when people like the “buzz”, best steer clear. NSAIDS(aspirin, Ibuprofen, etc) decrease pain by decreasing inflammation and swelling, but that also decreases the healing process. These drugs are also anti-prostaglandins. Prostaglandins maintain the lining of the stomach, which if taken for longer periods of time will give you gastritis, then bleeding. Tylenol works in another way, does nothing for the inflammation, but stops pain, decreases temperatures(NSAIDS DECREASE TEMPERATURES ALSO). Not taking something for pain increases BP, increases the body’s production of cortisol, which can lead to a “stress ulcer”. Everyone is an individual, some drugs work great for some, but not for others. Fentanyl therapeutically is given in micrograms(MCG), 50-100 mcg is therapeutic for an 170 lb non alcoholic individual. Alcoholics livers have been “trained” to break these substances down faster. I personally have refused narcotics for the last 30 years, because feeling “buzzed” is what I equate to feeling sick, also due to the fact as an HCW(healthcare worker) I am subject to random drug testing. Yes, I would have had an Rx, but I don’t want the hassle. The dentist wouldn’t extract an abcessed tooth because my BP was too high. No doctor (3) would prescribe me even one hydrocodone!!! Finally my dentist had a cancelation, and used marcaine to numb me up. BP came down and tooth extracted. Then he gave me a Rx for hydro’s which I promptly refused cause I didn’t need it. At age 3 I was taught to use self hypnosis for pain control, coupled with an NSAID I am just fine. The “Caine” group blocks the nerve very effectively. Kind of a nutshell look at pain killers from my experience. As always your experience can and will vary.
