Not the first time such stupidity has reared its ugly head.
A few years ago a fellow was given grief for butchering animals in his garage. He'd been doing it for decades. New neighbor complained to authorities. Two things came out of it. First it was legal. Second it was part of a religious ceremony. Once the second part came out the local authorities headed for the hills. They weren't even going to touch that one.

That story reminded me of many years ago. I had a neighbor a couple doors down that wasn’t happy unless she was miserable.
In our town there was no open burning allowed. However, the city ordinance permitted fires for “cooking and religious reasons”. When I moved in my lot had a bunch of trees that needed removal. I didn’t have any trouble getting rid of firewood but who wants branches? So I got a 55 gallon drum, puts some breathing holes in it and attached a tube-axial fan to a 6” duct and burned green branches as fast as I could load them.
She called FD five times. A batt, chief, four firemen and a rescue squad rolls up each time. I always had a Ziploc bag on a window sill with a hot dog in it and a sharpened stick and the city ordinace for them to read. I was on a volunteer fire department for five years and told them that and showed them my garden hose at the ready and no where near anything burnable. Off they went with no argument each time.
After that, they just sent a cop to assess the complaint. The cop walks up to me and says “you have to put that out”. I said “no I don’t”. He says “why”. I school him that a fire is permitted for cooking or religious reasons. He asked which one I was doing. I said take your pick. He said have a nice day.

A few year back we met up at my place on Halloween to cut and wrap a couple of elk after returning from a hunt. We had a pair hanging from the garage rafters and both doors wide open. After a bit it grew dark out and the trick or treaters started showing up. We had discarded one completely boned out whole rib cage and a pair of fully boned out hind quarters, partially out of the garage and into the driveway right where the walkway to the front door was. Of course this was done on purpose and had been requested by some of the "hunting groups sons". Of course there were a few wimps that would not even get close, but for the most part the kids were interested and wanted to check the carcass out close up.
I was planning to do a euro mount of one of the skulls, so I had the crab boiler out with a borrowed giant steel caldron on it. Once the water got too boiling, I drug a head and antlers out and stuck the head in the boiling water to help remove the remaining meat. Oh boy did this get the attention growing!!! A giant steel pot with a head/antlers sticking out with a huge head of steam rising off it, and laying next to it was the growing pile of bones---the rib cage was still fully in tact just meatless. I don't remember any of the neighbors getting their panties in a bunch, but I do remember the county sheriff car doing a couple of slow driveby's.

A deceased friend of mine had a warped sense of humor. He got a huge buck with a perfect basket of a rack. He used to drive early 1970's Chevy Malibus and had this buck tied over the trunk with a little something extra for a prank.
He took a tennis ball and colored it with a red magic marker and put it over the nose of the dead deer. The tongue was hanging out and the tennis ball was a dull red.
At a traffic light next to a van full of kids there was a scream!!!!!
AHHHHGGGGG!!!! He KILLED RUDOLPH!!!

The woman driving the van was freaked out as well and called the cops. A Sheriff's Deputy pulled my friend over and when the Deputy saw the tennis ball he started laughing. They both sat there laughing and the cop told him that it might be a good idea to take the tennis ball off of the nose incase the next one freaked out had an accident.

Two things came out. First it was legal. Second it was mental illness.

I think there was a long ( and heated? ) thread here 10 or more years ago about somebody butchering in their driveway and I think they were in California ……

Cholo or others remember? Was Wolfsong involved in the thread?

the barn we hang ours in is open on both sides where cattle feeders are

but then if you're close enough to see what we're doing, you're trespassing, so there's that. :D

Years ago,, I was butchering a deer in the open,, next to my house. A neighbor lady,,, had began dating a guy,, and I later learned the guy was a parolee. He came by,, saw what I was doing, stopped to chat a little. I explained how I hunted with a handgun, and made neck shots for an instant kill, and ruined no meat. He inquired about my hunting a bit more,, and I told him that I was a serious handgunner.

About a year later,, knowing his g/f was having issues with a sibling,, over the house,,,, went over the top. He set fire to the house,, and drove to SC & committed suicide. Later on,, in a discussion about him & the fire etc,, I learned that he had made a few comments about leaving me alone. When asked why,, he said that not only could I shoot, but I was good with a knife. He never gave me any problems,, so I guess my deer gutting & skinning etc made an impression.

Uh, I mentioned the same incident in that thread. Geesh, I didn't think it was that long ago. How old am I anyway? Did I start that thread?

On the plus side, a few of my more Karenish neighbors have stopped complaining about my coyote traps. Either that or the County just has the whole thing documented and tells the Karens to go away instead of bothering me.

Gotta be10 years ….. heck I been retired 6 already and think it was well before that.
Not sure why I remember some of those things ……
