P93 Barrel Slide Lock-Up ... link vs block

My 15 year old P93 uses a 1911 style link to lock the barrel and frame.

When did Ruger change over to cam blocks and why? Is the cam superior or was the switch based on ecomonics?

According to COFFEEPOT ( a member that hasn't posted here in a while that retired from working for Ruger & was very knowledgeable about the P-series) Ruger started using camblocks after they started making the .40 caliber P94's & had some problems with the guns being worn from the round. Personally I have a .40 caliber P94 with a swinging link & it is fine.
Interestingly enough some of the .40 caliber P94's were made with camblocks. Some were made with swinging links. I believe they used the camblock exclusively in their P series pistols that were introduced after the P94.
 
I like both guns styles. I think it is just newer tech. But the old swing link style will out last me and my kids most likely.

So to answer your post.

New technology (a lot of guns are cam block. Glocks are)
And as Mike said the second gen of P944's were where it started.
Then the 95,97,345 had cams. Not sure but I think the SR line is also cam block.
 
Glocks use a locking block arrangement instead of a swinging link. The Ruger cam block design has some similarities to both approaches but is in other ways different from both. As far as I know the cam block design is unique to Ruger handguns.

The Glock locking block arrangement involves a fixed locking block that is pinned to the frame with either one or two pins depending on the gun and the generation of the gun. The locking block doesn't move at all.

The Ruger cam block design incorporates the locking/unlocking surfaces onto the rear of the recoil spring guide. The recoil spring guide and locking/unlocking portion combined are called the cam block. The cam block pivots on the slide stop pin. As the barrel unlocks due to interaction of the bottom barrel protrusion with the unlocking surface of the cam block, force is applied to the cam block in a rearward direction. Since the cam block can't move to the rear but can pivot, the rear of the cam block pivots downward on the slide stop pin.

The downward pivoting mostion of the rear end of the cam block is arrested when it comes into contact with the frame. The result is that the force of stopping the barrel is distributed between a rearward impact of the cam block to the slide stop pin and the downward impact of the bottom rear surface of the cam block onto a thick, flat area of the frame forward of the magazine well.
