P90 magazine problems

I've had my P90 for a few years and happy with the performance. The thing is I have tried to buy extra mags for it several times and run into headaches everytime. The shops around here carry "factory" Ruger mags but they are different from what came with the gun. The original ones are SS with the plastic followers. I've never had a miss feed (except with some wad cutters), but all jacketed rounds work great. The mags the shops sell have the stamped metal followers and every one I have tried has failed to feed cleanly. I've had shops and a couple of gunsmiths try to tweak the followers to get a clean feed with no satisfactory results.

As far as I'm being told the gun is in fine shape with no wear or issue that would cause the problems.

Is this a common problem with the mags for this model? Or any advice to get past it?

Don't even mention Promags...... no luck with their mags other than making decent door stops.

Never heard of this problem. I have 6 mags .... 5 have metal followers, 1 is black plastic. Haven't had a problem with any of them in my P90 or P97.

I "think" but am not certain that the one with the plastic follower came with the P97.

P90s first came with mags with the plastic followers (7 rounders). Later they came out with the metal followers (8 rounders). Both the P90 and P97 later came with the 8 rounders. My P90s and P97 never jam. They work great with Pro-mags. I was hesitant to try them, because I've had bad luck with Pro-mag 9mm mags, but the .45 mags work just as well as the factory ones in my guns.

Will see what happens here in the next few days. I just bought a used mag off eBay for the P90 that looks like the ones I already have with the plastic follower. It was listed as an 8 rd mag so that kind of threw me with the plastic follower. Like you, my history with the Pro-mags is based on my 9mm days and one used Pro-mag for the P90. Like I said, no better than a door stop.

Just logged off my first visit to GunBroker and it looks like I have a few more options than I do locally. I might try a new Pro-mag just for the heck of it.

Never heard of anyone having that kind of trouble. I have 11 eight round factory mags and 3 seven round factory mags and they all perform flawlessly in my P90, P97 and P345. You just never hear of those pistols having any kind of problems.

I had some feeding problems with some types of ammo in the factory metal split-follower mags. I had some dead 1911 mags and pulled the one-piece flat followers out of them to replace the factory Ruger followers. Worked great! No more feeding problems and 100% reliability but the mod turned them into 7-rd mags. I'll take 7 for sure over 8 maybes all day long.

I've got a pile of P90 factory mags, all obtained used, some with plastic and some with the "McCormick"-style metal followers. They seem to all work fine as 7-rounders. I've had issues with some loading 8 rounds.

While I was waiting for a used mag I bought off of fleaBay I was reading through the older posts and found this one by modrifle3.

When I received the mag I bought it was the older style 7 rd. with the polymer follower. A quick clean up and took it for a test drive. Flawless feeds with no problems. While I was out shooting I ended up in a conversation with another owner of a P90 and talked about the mag problem. He had three mags for his that had the 8 rd. metal followers. He told me he had never had a missfeed with any of them. We switched mags and loaded with our own ammo and ran through them. Each of my three polymers fed fine through his P90. All three of his metal follower mag failed to empty in mine. All three failed to feed on the 6th round. There has to be a reason for it.
