OUCH !!!

As some of you may know, I had back Surgery in the form of a Laminectomy at the L 3-4-5 area done on Tuesday 30 June at my local VA hospital; I was released from the hospital on 03 July. A friend asked me on 04 July how I was doing and this was my reply to her:

OUCH !!!!
Last night was the first night I could lay down to sleep; Other nights the pain in my leg nerves and back was so bad, I couldn't lay on my side, back or stomach, so I had to sleep sitting on the edge of the hospital bed (a torture device to insure maximum patient discomfort) with a pillow on top of the bed side tray and me leaned up over it to take the weight off the lower back and legs ; So, things ARE improving.
I was operated on late Tuesday (6/30) but I don't remember getting wheeled into the operating room (nor out of it for that matter). The food was BLAND and apparently what they considered a "healthy diet" which meant NO SALT on ANYTHING. It was also one packet of Sweet and Low for your coffee and cereal. One breakfast was really good, It was what they called an "Eggbiscuit" which was a "burgershaped" scrambled egg, on an English Muffin with cheese on it; Quite Tasty !! One of nurses was nice enough to bring some 2% milk to replace the 1% water that came on the tray every day.
I do have to say that the Nursing staff in the Surgical recovery unit were the BEST, they were caring and concerned about how I felt and how I was healing; Bless them ALL !!
The MAIN THING that has me PISSED OFF is that the DAMN SURGEON never came to visit me AFTER the operation; There was no way I could ask him questions about the surgery, how everything looked, etc etc, The SOB never bothered to come and visit or check on me; all I got to see was interns a couple of times in the mornings

Would I do it again? Well, given the way I felt before the surgery and the way I have felt since, Let's just say the scale is STILL tipping back and forth; So ask me in a couple of weeks when I feel better, the surgery is well healed and the nerves have settled down a bit more.

I remember only too clearly when I had abdominal surgery several many
years back. "OUCH!" Durn bet-cha! Hospital bed being an implement of
torture? Durn bet-cha! Hospital food being FAR less than optimal
(see how polite I can be?), Durn Bet-cha!

I hope you are doing VERY well, very shortly. :D
AND that your improvement is at least as much as mine was. 8)

Hang in there...my Wife had similar surgery some years back and it took some time and she doesn't do "time " well but she did what she was told and has had a great outcome...we know 2 other's that had it about the same time and didn't believe the doctor and started bending, lifting and doing more than told and the outcomes for both were not the best...My Wife's doctor said the main problem they face is patients pushing things too hard too early...get well.

I had a Lami done in 09. My only suggestion is get up and get moving as soon as you can. Get rid of the walker asap also. Move move move. Good luck and keep walking.
FYI I do not have any pain anywhere in my back or legs. I hope you get the same results.

Best wishes for a full recovery ! Maybe check your billing info. When my Mom was in a hospital she found out a doctor kept making his rounds while she slept, he'd sign the clip board and bill.

Pamela, here is a long distance hug wishing you a speedy & full recovery. Any surgery can be a hard thing to overcome. Some, by far are worse than others, but healing has begun.
I would have asked to see the surgeon if he hadn't visited me. Even in the VA they are supposed to personally check on their patients. I'd make it a point to request his presence for your next visit.

Things will get better for you. After years of pain, and suffering through numerous epidural injections that brought very temporary relief, my wife had similar surgery to yours, in 2004. Recovery was slow, or so it seemed at the time, complicated by the fact that, at the time, we were living in a 3rd floor walk-up apartment. She had to live at her best friend's house for a month until she was strong enough to make it up to our place.
The results of the surgery have been VERY satisfactory. She may have her complaints, but back pain is no longer one of them :) .

God Bless.
Jeff

Linda and I send our prayers for your speedy recovery. I fully concur with your comment concerning the hospital beds. Last year, when I spent a week there, I never got a good nights sleep. No matter where it was adjusted to I slid to the bottom.

Here's wishing you a speedy and complete recovery from MO. I made a reservation for you and me to go bunge jumping soon! :)

I feel your pain...literally...I feel your pain. I guess I should say, felt. :) I just had my second laminectomy and an extension of the fusion rods to include L3-4&5 last October. (Did they fuse yours with screws and rods also?) Hang in there Pam. It gets better. I feel the best I have in over 10 years now. Prayers for a speedy recovery. Be sure to do ALL the PT religiously.

No surgeries, but broke T10 twice, about a year apart. Commiserate with debilitating back pain all too well. Prayers up for a quick and full recovery. Light stretching when it's allowed helps blood flow and flexibility...some folks find yoga is an excellent adjunct to surgery. I'd do it, but my hairy drumsticks just don't look right in the tights...

Feel better Pamela. Never fun having to go to the hospital. Glad to hear the staff in recovery treated you well. I didn't realize the Dr. never came to see me after my last surgery until you mentioned it in your post.

Pam . . . . Look on the bright side, when I had my surgery the doctor came
in the next morning to say "Good thing we got you in yesterday, otherwise
we would have had you in for emergency surgery tomorrow."

If I ever have to do anything like that again, I'll take not hearing from him.

Pamela,

I hope you are feeling much better soon and get the results that you deserve.

Hang in there kiddo!

Thank Y'All for the good wishes and kind remarks; I have been improving daily, back is feeling better and I'm HOPING the the pain down the outside of both legs and the knee area will go away with time. Hydrocodone 5%/ 325 Acetaminophen every 5 -6 hours does help me sleep right now. I use the walker when up and cooking or wandering into the bathroom, etc. I DID go grocery shopping on Monday (with my spouse) and those little electric carts are quite nice; Shopped a store where many of the employees know me (NO; NOT because I am a grumpy old lady, but because I have always tried to treat then like people and NOT like robots).
As far as I could tell from the surgical reports on the VA website "MYHEALTHEVET", there was NO Fusion, No metal rods, and NO Screws either; all they apparently did was clear away the excess bone growth on both sides of L-4, the bottom edge of L-3 and the top end of L-5 and some of the arthritic growths on those same vertebrae.
STILL catching up on emails and way behind on the Forum in reading.
Again thanks for the caring, prayers and good thoughts.
Pamela

Yes , get well soon! After my reconstruction and fused joints in my foot last Sept , Im finally getting back to work and feeling better. It was a long 10 months and it wasn't until the last few weeks where I finally started thinking it was worth the whole ordeal. I will never be 100% again but have not felt this good since my accident in 2006.

It is hard not to get discouraged with the initial pain and what seems like slow or no improvement with something like that but it will come. Try to keep your spirits up and think positive!
