Opening Day

Well, I am almost embarrassed to tell you how I "hunted" this one. I was hunting on my father in laws land, and had not had time to scout it at all. Only been back there a couple times. So, I drove the truck to the end of the field and put me a lawn chair in the bed. About 8 AM this fella walked by at about 150 yards. One shot from the Ruger 77 MK2 in .308 and meat on the ground.

SWEET!!!!!!!
I went out this morning,, (it's still archery season here,) and our rut is in full swing! I had a doe get chased by me by a spike. No shot available,,, and too darned quick. Then, this afternoon,,, as Miss Penny & I were driving out to go to a meeting,,, I spotted a nice buck. I quickly stopped my truck, pulled it backwards & around,, whipped out my binos. and from about 150 yds away,, standing in a grown power line right-of-way,,, stood a good sized 6 pointer. Then I realized why he was standing still. Two does were there as well. When one of them moved,,, he fell in right behind her.
The rut is on here & I need to be in the woods more.

Our firearms season isn't open yet, and I'm just not prepared for bowhunting this year; haven't had time to shoot enough to be sharp with my chosen equipment (Hill-style longbow and wood arrows); but my buddy and I decided to go to the woods this afternoon to see if we could find a hog. Open season on them all the time, and we like the meat. Of course, hogs were nowhere to be seen but I saw seven deer including three shooter bucks on my greenfield. Sigh.

Nice job, Tim! And your methodology sounds like it was taken from the same playbook as my old gunsmith boss used one year. He left the shop about 3 pm to head up the hill and on to where he wanted to hunt (about a half hour drive at the outside.) He was back in the shop in just about an hour on the dot.

His wife asked if he'd forgotten something, as he'd normally not be home until after dark. No, he'd turned off the highway onto a fire road, drove a quarter mile up and a nice buck meandered across the road in front of him. Then it kinda just stood there watching as he grabbed the rifle and got out of the truck for the shot. Easy as that! Both of you will remember those shots for a long time...
